I came accross a very good site which tells what are most essential things,
that we should consider while hosting a website on a webhosting service provider and it gives info about what are the different things that we should take care of while choosing a domain name

site is

(url removed due to spam in multiple forums. /Peo)

what do you feel people??

I think that a geocities site proclaiming good webhosting is an oxymoron. But thats for the share.

High website availability - and remember that 99.9% availability still means your site could be out of action for 8 hours a year. So find a place which provides you 99.99% availability as 100% availability is impossible
That is quite unrealistic. I would expect uptime to be above 99.9% with 100% for many months during the year, but to demand 99.99% doesn't allow suitable time to install security fixes and software updates to keep the server running smoothly.

I disagree have u ever used shell ever and installed security fixes ? If not dont post such things which are not true. Only for hardware problems does servers go down . And if ur simply installing package or software it doesnt take server offline. How i know ? cause i have installed both secuirty fixes ( firewall ) and softwares ( server monitoring softwares) and trust me u dont need to reboot server at all for installing softwares or secuirty things. you just restart that service which was fixed . not the whole machine.

So dont post something that is not entirely true at all.

'Security' covers more than just installing/upgrading a software firewall.

Yes i agree but stating that for only secuirty fixes and software updates will result in downtime is not always 100% true. There are ways to get things performed in timely and orderly manner to result in 100% uptimes.

You must aggree that 98% of the time the reason for server downtime is server hardware failure or dc problems not with softwares. only 2% comprise of downtime resulting due to software issues.

If it wasn't true I wouldn't have posted it. ;) Obviously you don't need to reboot etc for every update carried out but there are some things that do require a reboot. :)

One example that will require a server reboot is a kernel update. :)

You should update the kernel about once a month, so at least 1 reboot is required each month.

Ok 1 reboot and how long does reboot take ? most probably 5 mins for all services to go back online. And i know exactly when the next public site uptime update gonaa take place u can avoid downtimes. But 5 mins of downtime is not a big downtime if u do reboot at night say 3 am or 4 am .

Anywas . Offopic chat :biggrin2: :biggrin2: So moderator can close the topic if they feel . I done enough chatting here.

Ok good. you have the worlds greatest server, no hardware failures, everything is A.O.K. ... then Savvis takes a hit on a Cisco 7500 Switch, Level 3 Communications pulls the plug on AT&T, then your backup Verizon circuit takes packet loss cause you tried to push DS3 Redundancy through a Dual T1 Nortel ARN. Al in 30 days time.

Welcome to downtime or what we in the professional industry call "Bad Luck."

Sure glad you got those security fixes in.
