I recently completed a template for someone. I emailed him a screenshot of the template over a week ago. He has not responded. He agreed to pay $35.
Email he sent to me after I agreed to do it.
Thanks for making me this layout. I will pay. Its
definatly worth it. Yeah I do have some pics in mind.
I could give you some right now.

Here's the email I sent to him. The pictures were included as attachements.
Here are two pictures of the template. The full HTML
will be sent once I get your PayPal address. Anything
on there can be changed to your liking. I also need a
site name.

Find the site that he uses your template on. The rest is up to you.

I just gave him screenshots. The actual HTML is sitting on my desktop, zipped up and ready to go.

OH, then if thats the case... maybe he didn't like the layout one bit and decided to ignore it so he wouldn't have to pay, but this is just a possibility, im not sure.

Backing out in the middle of a deal? I have my share of that big time. It's not illegal, since the exchange/purchase has NOT been made. But you know this person/company will be on your growing blacklist. Again, c'est la vie! (I mean "that's life".)

I've learned now to get the money before I actually start work.

But then you'll have a chance of them thinking that you'd run off with the money, so yea.. just go with your instinct i guess, but consider this a lucky one since nobody got anything out of it.

I lost about 7 hours of my life. Of which I'll never get back.

From my experience,
When you will work with somebody, produce a contract (can be produced, signed and scanned, if you met them over internet) and ask for their contact details apart from email. The dodgy people never want to talk on the phone.
If you have no papers, you have nothing you can at least rely on when the other person refuse to co-operate. With no paper, it's purely your word against theirs.
During my troubles with people I have lost thousands of dollars and time. Better to just forget these things and move on to try to find the good things again.
Best of luck Tree_NC

Did the images show the whole template in high res or medium res and was it watermarked?
If it was the whole template in high res without a watermark he could have just taken the layout, sliced it and reverse engineered it.

That's totally logical. It was high-res, and I didn't think to watermark it. Well, I've learned something through this experience. Thanks guys.
If they're under 18, can they legally sign a contract?
James

To sign contracts you need to be 18 to be binded to them legally.
Underage, you'll need an adult co-signer.

I think that having someone get their parents to sign something for someone they don't even know would scare off a lot of clients. Especially for the kind of templates I do. I do templates mostly for fansites, usually run by 15-17 year olds. Sometimes younger.

Well, I know this thread is as old as dirt. But I finally got my money from this guy. I saw him pop up on MSN and slapped him around a few times.
So the moral of the story is: Sometimes waiting is the best thing to do.

ROFL, wish I coulda been there to see it.. but safest bet, just make a contract saying if you do not pay me when I send it to you and you keep it, it's illegal. This document may be held against you in the court of law, blah blah blah all that legal crap will scare em and they'll pay you :)
