I'm a morbid humor person myself, and I didn't find that gross or anything, but it was inappropriate and really bad timing :(.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but...

I'm almost certain this is little more than a hoax. Perhaps there's a thread of truth behind it (highly doubt it, but maybe), but the images in the presentation aren't real.

My reasons for thinking it's a hoax:

Number one: I don't suppose anyone's read "A Modest Proposal" and therefore don't see the resemblance...

Number two: The "friend's grandpa's friend" line is all too classic. Ask that friend of grandpa's, pretty sure his knowledge is second, third, or seven hundredth hand as well. The fact that he's from Hong Kong bears little relevance as this is supposedly happening in Taiwan.

Number three: It has all the trappings of an urban ledged, including the "pass this along to as many people as you can" line at the end.

Number four: Those aren't aborted fetuses, they're the size of ready-to-be-born babies.

Number five: The brain he's slicing in one frame is an adult brain, not an infants.

Number six: Those jars marked "Number 4" or something like that, the contents are a runny mush and the caption says they're for barbecuing... does anyone else see a problem here?

It's not real.

Following up on my sixth comment:

Did anyone notice what kind of jars those were? Baby food jars. Did anyone else get the broken-logic joke embedded there?

(For anyone who cares: Oct2000 is nearly ready, RetroFWS is up and running, I just have to get the signup script to work on F2S)

It's eight slides long

First Slide
On a dark gray background it says:

Don't get Scared !
See some facts going on in this world.
What you are going to witness here is a fact.

Second Slide
The background is an image of a woman reaching for a baby food jar, the words on it are blurred and unreadable. In the lower corner the caption says:

In Taiwan, dead babies or fetuses could be
bought at $50 to $70 from hospitals to meet
the high demand for grilled and barbecued babies …
What a sad state of affairs!!

Third Slide
This is only an image, no words. We see several jars arranged in a classic jar-pyramid. On each jar is a picture of two brains and the words "No. 4" as well as some Chinese or Japanese writing that I don't know what means.

Fourth Slide
Also an image only. In the foreground a man is cutting an adult brain in thick slices, the brain is hard and has been injected with a purple substance of some sort. Next to him is a meat grinder. In the background is a long table covered in plastic, on it four adult-size legs, badly decomposed, are visible.

Fifth Slide
Image only. The same man is washing what appears to be a still-born infant in a kitchen sink. There are several pots and pan around, in the background is a counter-top refrigerator, in the foreground an egg yolk is in a stainless steel bowl.

Sixth Slide
The man is now carrying the dismembered body out of a red-brick building on a platter, uncooked, ungarnished. There is a plastic box of recyclable cans in one corner, in the other spatulas and the like dangle in a window.

Seventh Slide
The man is eating the abdomen-portion of the baby like fried chicken. On the platter there are two legs, on the tabletop there is a third leg. Nearest him is an empty bowl and a small dish on which is a single cinnamon stick and a spoon. Also visible is a glass of orange juice and a balled-up napkin.

Eighth Slide
Dark gray background, on it are the words:

Please forward this message to as many people
as you can so that it can be seen by the world
and someone takes action on this.
It is a thing against human race and unless
we people of the world put hand to hand
to eradicate this custom, it will not end.
Even the word impossible says
it is impossible but it’s happening !!!

Following Dusty's well countered points, I decided to investigate my self. The controversy was originally spawned by rotten.com. After some time they admitted their mistake and this is what was the outcome

Rotten.com has come clean on the source of the faked man-eating-a-fetus
pics: They come from a rejected "art" exhibit by Chinese artist Zhu Yu, who
is the man in the photos.
Michael Pugliese

and
Baby-eating photos are part of Chinese artist's performance STAFF WRITER
Following the publication of an article in a Malaysian weekly tabloid that
alleged a Taiwanese restaurant served the meat of human infants, the Taiwan
government has taken steps to ensure the publisher prints a retraction

I'm sorry if i caused any misery. I apologise and I have taken down the presentation from the website and edited my post. I have decided to spread the awareness of this hoax to more people on the web. Such disgusting journalism should be discouraged. Usually I'm not affected by hoax or pass this on emails but since the medium of this hoax was new(powerpoint presentation) initially I got fooled by it.

If I'm correct the man in the photos is infact Zhu Yu actually eating the baby infants. I apologise again.

Rotten.com is no fun. :( Most pics are clearly faked but with some you don't know. I don't understand the entertainment value in dead and mutilated bodies. Mostly there isn't even a point a story to o with them. That site is icky. Like posting pictures of real accidents or executions for people to drool over. It's sick.

I haven't browsed rotten.com very much so I can't comment on that but I think there is always the danger of us living in an over sanitised world. Sick things happen all the time. I don't see why we should be protected from this fact. I have always found reality worse than fiction. My only concern is that fakes will stop people believing in reality. Saying that if I could think of a top quality hoax then I think I'd do it :) :p

meow

Sure. A hoax is a hoax. Bonsai kittens or eating babies. There is a punch, a point is made. Getting a kick out of watching 100 pictures in a row of the mess after a traffic accident or a real execution has nothing to do with being aware of the realities. Come one...take that one step further and we will be watching snuff movies thinking we keep ourselves oriented about what goes on in the world.

I don't like sensationalism but I think seeing the truth is a good thing. People die horribly in car crashes. I don't want to look at it. I have enough crap in my head already. but I don't see why I shouldn't be able to - and maybe I might not drink and drive so much (not that I do)

And what value does it have to publish the pics?

A news report is one thing. Even if most media (at least here) consider it highly unethical to publish close ups of dead people. If it isn't an assassinated dictator of a far away country:rolleyes:. And rightly so in my opinion. I wouldn't like to see the mutilated body of a relative on the center fold. Would you? "Look! Old granny made it to the front page at last." - In the name of truth.

A hoax has a value because it _is_ a hoax and _has_ a punch.

Snuff galleries are just profane exhibitions of death and gore and to get some excitement out of watching it is either sick or the spectator is a very emotionally blunted individual. There is no news value, no punch or the tiniest thought behind it.

Reality is war victims and dead bodies in Dachau and those truths need to be told, again and again. The victims of an everyday car accident or a murder shouldn't be abused further by being exhibited as entertainment in a tabloid or a gore gallery on the Internet.

Call me a softie, but that's my deeply felt conviction. Both life and death can be worth an ounce of respect. That doesn't mean I scream for restrictions and laws. It just means I dislike that kind crap.

So there.

I was listening to a well repected journalist on the radio yesterday - talking about his life. he was talking about how when covering the war in bosnia etc. the images shown were censored (by broadcasters/not government) and no real violence (dead people etc) could be shown as it would be too distressing to viewers. fair enough apart from the fact that these broadcasters are then happy to show films depicting just the same things.

I think people 'getting off' on car crash pictures is pretty sad but some people 'get off' on whatching kids playing in the park. I don't think that means we should stop children playing outside.

Who wants censorship? And what has war journalism to do with that I dislike sites with mutilated car crash victims?
