View Full Version : I need a host like Homestead

I had a site at homestead. They said they were'nt going to be free anymore, so I deleted it. I really liked the way Homestead worked, and I was wondering if anyone knew a good host that is like Homestead. Unlike some other hosts, Homestead let me copy and paste html onto my site. And it let me edit my site to make it look how I wanted it to look exactly. Any help is appreciated.

i have a friend that was using homestead and the same thing happened, i have been trying to convince her of using Freedom2surf (the best for what she wants, eg bannerless webboards.) She does not really no much about the coding side and ftp stuff so i suggested to her to use Frontpage 2000 to make here site and upload it to f2s. the best thing f2s is that they support 97,98,2000,2002 frontpage extensions, so why not do that?? (thats if u have frontpage 2k).
or....
why not try tripod?? they are a pretty easy straight forward 1 to use, but with their online editor, its not like homesteads. (they also support cgi/perl)
another thing, HOMESTEAD USERS ARE LAZY!!!!!! read HTML books/online tutorials.

like what do you mean? do they have some automated system that controls script that take up heaps of bandwidth or something? I ran 6 different scripts there and none of them worked, maybe just my luck :(

the first question that comes to mind, is why do you want something like homestead? it's so gross.
I'd use www.geocities.com

Homestead is still free! At least it is for the moment still. I'm not sure why every is so confused. I used to have a lot of sites on homestead and they are all still up, I haven't received one e-mail about them stopping their free service? However, I have received an e-mail awhile back about offering a bannerless paid hosting. They might be going down soon, but I have not heard about it.
I would try

They are NOT lazy. Not everyone has time or the motivation to learn HTML! It's very annoying when people say that. Why learn a standard when an automatic is so much easier? I certainly don't want to bother with gear shifts... maybe this person doesn't want to bother with frames or IMG tags.

Most homestead sites look crappy. Not all of them, but most of them. Go get Dreamweaver, it is not that hard!

actually, I'd recommend NetObjects Fusion... extremely easy to use, and puts out some cool sites. www.netobjects.com only about $99 (US), I think.. used to be about $300

i really doubt a homestead user would be using there own artwork, so wat if it can be done automatically, learning html or using a 'proper' html editor would ensure to be more worth while, i reccommend for previous homestead users to use frontpage or allaire homesite, both support html, both support wysiwyg.

My sites are all still up and doing fine. They still do offer a free service called Preview up to 8 mg.

We will still have a free version
You will still be able to build and maintain a site for free, with a new service called
Homestead Personal Preview. Sites built with the Preview version will be restricted
to: three pages, limited customer support, 8 MB of storage space, no use of the
offline SiteBuilder, and no option to remove Homestead branding.

Of coarse it still works, they're not changing anything til sept.

Right, what I'm saying is for those of us who do have the sites up on Homestead. If you want to keep them, you can still consolidate three of them down under one subdomain, like page Joes one two and three. Realize that all your other pages can still be files pages you can build in Word and then save as Web page, put on desktop and pickup from Homestead. available off of those 3 main pages, and I mean hundreds if you want. And as I said it's still free, even after september. And you should still be able to give the homestead branding the deep six. If you don't consolidate them now they will take some or all of them down.

Well
I say learn html homestead is good to a degree only though as it does not allow you to view the source while your creating the page, this would be VERY good if they implemented it. I like homesteads sitebuilder but I dislike what they did with their once good service, they are gonna lose ALOT of members and most people WILL NOT pay their high prices for soo little service some free webhosts offer more then HS pro. I also dislike people that say "learn html dummy" or something along those lines as it's a good program and saves alot of time, it's a plus to learn html and then you can make your page look just as good as any other. I know enough html to make a simple page within about 5-10 min but I like WYSIWYG editors for their speed of use, afterwards view the source and fix any messed up code, also a good prog to do this is AceHTML Freeware just copy & paste your source code into the window, then run a syntax check and fix any mistakes it displays(unless of course it's on purpose). Go to http://www.a1javascripts.com and view the html tutorial and learn the basics of html then practice a little bit.
