In a past post it was discussed about being your own webserver. Some joked and some said it was easy.

Now...I'm talking about turning your own computer into a web host..a me-myself-I thing.

It seems you can download Apache or FreeBsd ? Static IP#? I'm studying it but I'm not yet a wizard and hate to screw up my computer with something I don't know how to get out of.

I saw this

Anybody ever try this or is it a joke?

Of course you can turn your own computer into a webhost, thats what the cable modem hosts have been doing for these 2 years. Jesus.

You can I am planning to do this once I get GNU/Linux up and running. I will go back and install the Apache webserver.

well.. it's easy to do, but...

1. does your ISP allow it? read their TOS..

2. what OS is your computer (or the computer you want to use as the server)... some are better suited to be a server, than others. like, I sure wouldn't use a Win98/98/ME or a Mac to be a server.. a Windows 2000, or *NIX/BSD system, yeah..

if you have Windows2000, it comes with a "Personal Web Server".. I think Win98 might, too... it's a simple server, that's pretty easy to set up.. don't have any idea of it's security.

if you have a *nix system, you prolly already have apache installed... but, since you even asked this question, i know you aren't running linux, or bsd.
