Can anyone direct me to a good place to buy domain names and if i buy the domain can I use it w/ my apache server? Thanks.

I think you should go with reliable and rputed domain registrars available like enom, godaddy, registerfly etc. You can also go for Yahoo domain registration at $2.99. That is also a nice option.
One should choose a domain name very carefully. The DNS server (also known as name server) is usually provided by the web hosting company. The domain setup on the DNS server can be done after the domain is registered, however, the domain name will not work until the DNS setup is completed. In case of Apache web server, the subdomain is configured by virtual host entries in httpd.conf.

So I would have to set up a virtual server for it to work?

okay my port 80 doesnt work so i use port 90 if I get yahoo how do i make it so that www.whatever.com goes to whatever.com:90
