A microsoft ad for Windows XP

Promising you "The unexpected Experience", the Beast of Redmond's new Swiss ad for the operating system features an attractive young lady and her boyfriend getting it on in a living room somewhere. All's going fine, she whips her top off and the young man tries to relieve her of her patriarchal symbol of oppression (the bra).

Nothing doing. Twisting twisting and nothing. Then an information menu pops up on her back. "Hilfe holen, Anleitung drucken, Gleich offnen, Abbrechen". We've no idea what they mean, but running his finger down her back he goes for the third choice. Tap.

And he's faced with a password query. The woman smirks (why?) and the Microsoft logo comes up on the screen

Typical Microshaft.

meow
July 25th, 2001, 22:17
That was kind of obvious. Did you think I really thought it was a virus?:p
I just wondered what the CRC thing did since that was something new to me. Everyone misunderstands me today! I'll go missle myself.:(

CRC stands for Cyclic redundancy checking, which is a method of checking for errors in data that has been transmitted on a communications link. A sending device applies a 16- or 32-bit polynomial to a block of data that is to be transmitted and appends the resulting cyclic redundancy code (CRC) to the block. The receiving end applies the same polynomial to the data and compares its result with the result appended by the sender. If they agree, the data has been received successfully. If not, the sender can be notified to resend the block of data. A less complicated but less capable error detection method is the checksum method

heheh make sence?

Actually I have a couple of sticks on their way to me right now. Also a better processor. I don't think I'll bother with the processor until I get my new machine and this is degraded to an extra though. I've heard it's a pain to change them.

Phrozen, did you wonder about the odd number? This one uses paired RAM sticks. There's 2*16 + 2*4, if I remember right.

Yep, that clears up that mystery for me. At least I know I shouldn't feel to bad for having 120MB RAM now...

meow
August 4th, 2001, 23:49
No need for that. :)
I'm only getting 16's so the difference won't be that big. The most I can use is 4*32 but I couldn't get hold of used and SIMMs are too expensive for me wanting to waste the money on new ones for this machine. It's too old.
