Why does it cost more to make a custom server that is worth less than their normal package, even if they have the parts?
Is it the man-hours that go into putting the server together? I got a quote for the least powerful least bandwidth dedicated server at burstNET and it cost a lot more (about 2.5x) than their regular package which was three times better than the one I customized.

Dedicated means that your site is the only one on it. So it's like having your own server, expect that you don't exactly own it. By signing up for the regular hosting packages a hosting company offers, your site is placed on a server which has more than one site on it. Depending on the servers capabilities, it usually has more than a hundred sites on it.
A regular RaQ3 server can have up to 200 sites on it, so a more powerful one, could have almost twice as more. By having your own dedicated server, your site uses all it's resources and runs at top speed which the server can serve. Hope this helps! If not, below are the defenitions of dedicated:
ded·i·cate (dd-kt)
tr.v. ded·i·cat·ed, ded·i·cat·ing, ded·i·cates
To set apart for a deity or for religious purposes; consecrate.
To set apart for a special use: dedicated their money to scientific research.
To commit (oneself) to a particular course of thought or action: dedicated ourselves to starting our own business. See Synonyms at devote.
To address or inscribe (a literary work, for example) to another as a mark of respect or affection.
To open (a building, for example) to public use.
To show to the public for the first time: dedicate a monument.

Unfortunately, based on his 1433 posts, I'm sure "needcgispace" is familiar with what the word 'dedicated' means.
I think he had a quote for one dedicated server and then asked for a custom quote of another dedicated server from the same company with less features and it turned out that the server with less features was more expensive?

They probably get there normal servers ( or parts ) in bulk, therefor are able to have a lower price. If what you want are different than they have to order those parts individually therefor driving up the price. Thats my guess.
