does anyone no what type of program to use (free) to set up a webserver from my computer? which is reliable

ftp server or webserver? The title says FTP server, that's why I'm asking.

that's would be a really big risk, i suggest using bittorent with a private tracker if it's for file trannsfer of large quantities.

how do you use XAMPP though? I have it, but i still cant seem to view php files on my comp without putting them on my actual web serer. i am a little confused. add Prophecy_Internet@hotmail.com to your MSN if you can help me. Thanks in advance.

They have to be in the htdocs directory, or wherever you specified in your httpd.conf.
