View Full Version : DataPacket.net - Good or Not?

Hello,
One of the other places I'm definitely considering is DataPacket.net. Has anyone heard good or bad things about them? Also, what is different of being on a Windows NT server, rather than a Unix? I know the server paths are different, but anything else that would make Windows servers worse than Unix?
Please respond soon. Only three more days until we have to decide where to get hosted. :)

WinNT: slower performance, crashes often.
Unix: stable, fast, crashes close to never.

Does the necessarily go for all NT servers, or some? DataPacket.net seems to have their pages load extremely fast and I have heard from other people that Windows NT servers, depending on what kind are generally faster than Unix. About crashing more often, I have heard that. But...doesn't it again depend on the servers CPU, etc....

true. i think it would be better to with a Cobalt Raq4* host rather than an NT host IMHBBO

I don't trust RaQ servers at all. My old site, used to crash them every week. Slow speed at times when there are lots of users on at the same time, it's very sluggish. They can't handle tons of bandwidth and are slow in generating information for MySQL databases. So, with that said, I'll never go on a Cobalt again. :)
Most definitely I'll go with NT. I'm just waiting to hear from DPN about some questions regarding .htaccess files on NT servers and installing phpMyAdmin. Would anybody here happen to know if it's possible to do everything with a .htaccess file on a NT, like on a Apache? Also, is it possible to install phpMyAdmin?

you can install phpMyAdmin on an NT server, just mod it if need be.

I have had nothing but good experiences on NT servers. They have always worked better for me. WHT is a very informative and good site. You would probaby get a more informed answer there.

If you're on a Raq4 and the server has anything more than 128 MB RAM, I really doubt that you would experience any of those problems.
The only disadvantage that you have with Raq servers is that many "discount" hosts are using the Raq 2 or 3 with 128 MB RAM and trying to host up to the limit of 250 sites (that limit is easy to remove btw).
In other words, you have companies being started up every day because of the low-costs associated with Raq hosting. When these companies start seeing profits, who wants to buy another server? Just load em all on the one and keep on bringing in the profits.
So, in my opinion, this is why the Raq has such a bad reputation. But it is all in the hands of the web host as to how well their server performs. :)

After reading that post WHT, I have decided not to sign up with DataPacket.net. Afwul support is the last thing I need. I was maybe thinking... Aletia Hosting (http://www.aletiahosting.com/). Anybody know anything about them?
Also, if you are starting a business site, do you have to sign up for the Business plan? It's too much for what I need and I don't have that kind of money.

It wasn't me, it was my dad! ;) He's not exactly clear about the whole hosting issue and I told him you don't, but he said, well "Ask someone!" hahaha :D Thanks!

Hayama-kun - How is Aletia Hosting? What kind of operating system do they have? How is their support? I have seen the online demo of the control panel, and it looks good! Can you control the bandwidth using a bandwidth throttle? Thanks in advance! :D

how can you control the bandwidth when the bandwidth settings have been set forth already? :p
Aletia Hosting is fine, they run red hat if i'm not mistaken, their support returns messages on the hour...anything else? you're not really spending a lot of cash here :p

I just thought limiting the kbps on days which are very packed, like weekends would help us not get over the bandwidth limit, anyways... :o
I'm glad that support is good, that's a good thing! Are you currently running any MySQL databases, if yes, how is the speed when accessing and processing information? Also, where is your site? I want to see how fast their servers are...thanks! :)

Aletia has their servers hosted at the NOC in Parsippany NJ, and it is quite fast on my """""""56k""""""" (considering I'm only 10 miles away :p)
http://stingray.nocdns.com/ (server i'm hosted on, it's quite fast)
