It says that it allows 20gigs/month of bandwidth... is that just when I'm uploading? downloading? both? and does it also effect how many visitors visit my site or is that not part of the bandwidth.

It affects everything.

Not possible.

Bpg,

I would suggest keeping your media files on geocities and then just uploading your html files to your hosted site. That way you don't have to worry about bandwidth. Anything over 10 GB would be plenty for plain html files, even if your site is popular.

Good luck finding a host :)

I thought Geocities disables hot-linking? Besides, how much bandwidth could you possibly use? Unless you've got an extraordinary amount of visitors, or have HUGE html or media files, which probably isn't a good idea anyway, since it tends to annoy 56k users. 20gb sounds like more than enough to me. :)

Probably right about Geocities disabling that. I'm not up to date on all of the free services anymore.

I wasn't saying that 20 GB isn't enough, but you do pay for it... If he can lower the bandwidth, all the better. :D

My medial files (real audio) are usually around 500k and I'm not planning on posting a lot of them. Also if i get a lot of visitors will that be considered part of my bandwidth?????????????????????

Are their any hosts that have unlimited bandwidth. Thanks!

There are not any hosts that offer unlimited bandwidth.

If you read the terms of service for an "unlimited" host, usually they say if you go over 10 GB / month or use more than 20% of the resources, then they have the right to remove your site.

So, when you go with a company that offers 10 GB at least you know they are being up front about what they offer.

Regarding the visitors to your site and bandwidth... Bandwidth is calculated by what your visitors (includes you) download from the site. This would include .html, .txt, .ram, .mp3, etc. Some hosts also include email (sending and receiving), FTP (uploading), and other data into the total bandwidth usage per month.

What I would personally suggest doing is going with a small hosting plan to start off. Maybe 5 MBs of bandwidth (This will be cheap, a lot less than your max / year). And then make sure that your host allows you to upgrade your hosting plan for more bandwidth in the future.

If you want to try something like this, we could work out a deal with you. You would get the following features, based on what you originally asked for.

1. 150 mb of space
2. FTP
3. 5 GB Data Transer
4. Domain Transfer (no charge)

Our hosting plans include many more features and the specs quoted above come to $119.40 per year.

We do not support streaming real audio, but I believe regular real audio would be fine. You could test it before making your first payment. If it works on geocities, I'm sure it would work on our servers.

Hope this information helps you to find a host. :)

(Mod-note: If you think the section about our services is not allowed here, please edit it. Based on his request "Are their any hosts that...", I figured it would be okay to post this here.

Anything to do with data transfer will be counted as bandwidth usage, including pop email traffic, ftp upload/download, http...etc.

If you are unsure how much bandwidth you needed for your website. I suggest you sign up a package with 10-15 GB of data transfer for the first month. Then decide whether to upgrade your account if needed.

UNLIMITED anything is physically impossible. Everyone has to pay for data transfer, from the top down.

But, you'll no doubt find that any host who offers 'unlimited' bandwidth has a clause in their Terms of Service which grants them the ability to decide what the finite levels of 'unlimited' are.

unlimited bandwidth can be as low as 5 GB. be careful when choosing a host.

Hayama-kun, I've seen it TOS'ed as up to ONE gig. Yep, ONE!

bpg_snoopdogg, if you plan on having large files, plan on also paying for the cost of serving them, as no one else is going to (surely not the host).

I haven't tried it yet but everything is unlimited. It's a reseller so I'm not really sure about the reliability.

The supporter of this forum is probably very grateful to be getting the free publicity. I think I would change our policy to unlimited if it meant free advertising. :D

Basically, if you're paying for unlimited services and your site gets to the point where it is nolonger profitable for the web host to offer their services, your unlimited service comes to an end. (how ironic)

You'll also lose your money if you paid annually and most likely suffer downtime due to the lack of prior notification that you will receive.

I'm sure it's not a pleasant experience. :(
