Do you think it is best to use frames in a website or use an alternative like templates etc?

it would be better that you use perl/php includes

Shouldn't this be in the Webdesign/HTML forum?

What has templates got to do with anything?

My opinion is that frames are most often used because the designer feel they are cool, not because he has any real use for them. If they aren't done well with a whole lot of thought given to navigation and the problem with search engines taken care of they SUCK, SUCK, SUCK!
I'm tired of screwed up navigation on bigger sites and finding an interesting page through a search engine only to realize it's an eloped framed page that can't find it's way back to mama. Ick!

They're soon gone anyway. w3c has at last gathered enough courage to throw them out.:D

 Another thing. Most often the designer also want 2, 3 or more frames to reload at the same time. In comes pesky Java Scripts that spawn their error messages all over the place.

I have spoken. I'm through. I'm going out to buy something yummy to build my body to new and even sexier dimensions. :o

so what do you recommend?

Frames, when used correctly and designed well, can work. Unfortunately, 99% they're not used correctly and aren't designed well. Frames can make an already bad site a horrible site.

What do we recommend? Not using frames. You have many other options, very few designs revolve around frames and those that do are seldom good ones. If you were going to use frames for navigational purposes you could use SSI or PHP includes, or, failing that, you could just use regular HTML and update every page when you change something (you could also use JavaScript to replicate SSI, but I wouldn't recommend that).

Most people who use frames couple it with annoying animations and Javascript popups and mouse followers and scrolling text and such because they think it makes them look cool. As for frames... I've only seen them used correctly once. And that is with the email service I am using: www.postmark.net (You have to sign up to see the frames though :()

I don't see whats so bad about them unless it's some amateur job that just makes things look stupid, ridiculous and all that sort of thing.

11-0

Simple html tables can often be used instead.

I used to surf at 640x480, and I lost track of the number of times the bottom of a navbar either just didn't show (due to a noscroll parameter on the frame) or had an ugly scrollbar that made the site look stupid. Think!

one word. frames suck. er that's two words but who cares!

use tables instead. better control in layouts and all.

There is only one use for frames and that is cloaked redirection.

BTW does anybody here use layers. I think layers and CSS are cool. and should be used more frequently but in the right manner ofcourse. problem is most browsers mess up the rendering of layers.

Now come on and fess up. Who here honestly made a site with frames and thought it was cool at the time :)

*raises hand*

But hey, I at least gave them the option of frames or no frames :D

I've never used frames either. But I forced myself through Joe Barta's Table Tutorial to know what they are about.

just to be annoying I'd like to say that frames can occassionally be useful even nice :p

like if you have a load of thumbnails to click on to see some pics. :)

most of the time people just use them to plonk an annoying logo at the top of the page which does suck big time.

but most of the time frames just cause problems and should not be there.

Yes, sometimes, sure. Some web shops make good use of them too. Long scrolling lists, you know what I mean. But then they have a purpose. Mostly they are used for no reason and in the wrong way.

that's a bit conciliatory. I was hoping to start a flame war :p

How come nobody mention ColdFusion? Nobody use it??...

If you are using ColdFusion, it is <cfinclude template="...">

Also, NEVER use frames, unless you have VERY good reasons to use it.

Because the poll was about Frames? Again, what have templates to do with anything?
