Agreed - that should be #1 priority....

Personally I'd go for 770 pixels wide and put <center> tags round the whole thing.

yeah centreing would help

and get the background all the same colour

go to your preferences in IE or whatever you use

make sure alert me of all errors if ticked

look at your page

then do it in NS and any other browsers you find. Also email it to outlook (that usually gets a few more)

alternatively write tight code with lots of

if (document.thingy) {document.thingy something}

to trap errors but most are just ' and things which is very annoying to all

Fact is you have more JavaScript than HTML in there. Doesn't seem to do much thought. I don't think this is &#70;&#117;&#99;&#107;Page. What is it? No offense, I'm just curious. ;)

There's still around 20% of people using 640x480. I'd set it to 550 pixels across or you'll piss off a lot of people.

These stats aren't exactly scientific, but I'd say you're more than a bit high with 20%...

According to TheCounter.com's global stats for June, only 5% of visitors were using 640x480, compared to 56% for 800x600 and 30% for 1024x768.

Now, that's only counting sites that have a counter from there on it, but its still not a bad reference, considering that's 685,591,360 hits...

Some other interesting stats:

JavaScript:
Javascript 1.2+: 597284572 (87%)
Javascript <1.2: 3511692 (0%)
Javascript false: 84795096 (12%)

Operating System:
1. Win 98 497488981 (72%)
2. Win 95 65329102 (9%)
3. Win 2000 49552782 (7%)
4. Win NT 39938244 (5%)
5. Unknown 14682142 (2%)
6. Mac 11888854 (1%)
7. WebTV 2936429 (0%)
8. Linux 1627857 (0%)

Browser
1. MSIE 5.x 547358243 (79%)
2. MSIE 4.x 55140983 (8%)
3. Netscape 4.x 47151030 (6%)
7. Mozilla 5.x 1876548 (0%)

finally, some scary stats:
1,271,338 visitors were using Windows 3.1
1,114,025 visitors were using a 2.x browser or less (IE/NS)
185062 visitors were using 16 colors
29972054 visitors were using 256 colors

Yuck. Image what your site must look like using Windows 3.1, MSIE 1.0 and 16 colors....

Not that scary considering it's based on 685 591 360 visitors.:)

It's fantastic how fast screen resolution has changed. 6 month ago 640 was still pretty common and I'm positive 800 was in absolute majority.

I base 20% on my user stats of about 60,000 visitors to my old site.

Different audiences use different resolutions. Usually when someone has 640x480 they eitehr (a) Don't know how to change resolution or (b) Have bad eyesight.

Is it really that hard to design a page for all people? It isn't. Nobody cares if you have fancy graphics, but they do care if they have to scroll the page to read something.

You have to look at design through the eyes of everyone, not just yourself.

lol! I asked recently (not here) if I as the only one that still cared about 640*480 and got no answer. Guess we are two anyway. I think it's a good strategy too. Soon we will be facing God knows what odd equipment. I had such a screen myself not long ago so I'm kinda used to think along those lines.

Heh, I never said you shouldn't design for 640x480.

With the exception of my portfolio, I try to make all my sites stretch or center to look proper on any resolution. Obviously you can't make things look perfect on all resolutions, but I try to have my sites work even with 640x480.

Generally they look best in min 800x600, tho, since 640x480 doesn't give you a lot to work with.

i ditched designing for 640x480 a year ago.
out with the old, in with the new (or ... the most tolerable old)
