Don't set it to 1GB, it'll probably kill your webserver with multiple large files.
If you're using PHP to upload the files you'll also need to change the MAX_POST_SIZE and MAX_EXECUTION_TIME settings or PHP will not accept the large files because it will either timeout or not accept more than 8MB of the file (default MAX_POST_SIZE setting).

I agree with ani-m, how long do you keep files for?
(500 mb sounds good. Good storage size yet not overkill)

I think 250mb is the sweet spot for (free) online file storage.

What type of hosting are you targeting?
Simple site 100Mb will be fine, if it's more file hosted then it will have to increase.
Then again what will be the download limit?

100MB with a 200 download limit
what do you guys think?

100mb is very low for today's standards, I personally offer 200 and also find it low but can't keep up with the bandwidth usage. Well Rapidshare doesn't offer much like some companies who offer 5GB per file (those companies will not be cited here but they might soon be overloaded with files which can cause them to go down.)
