Is there one? Isn't there like 10,000 free hosts out now or something, how could there be competition, and how do they all get so many members? How do the paid ones stay in business?

There is competition between hosts that have special features i.e. CGI/PHP/mySQL.
The bare bones hosts like Geocities, after a while, start to disappear (like how 9ug had died but had later been resurrected)
Pay hosting means no ads, reliable connections, more space, more features, a real control panel (Ensim/Plesk/CPanel), domain hosting, etc. Your ignorance is showing ;)

The Point of most free hosts is to make money from the ads they display on your site. Some hosts use a free service to draw attention to their paid services with more options. Starting a free host is a good "ebusiness" idea if it is done right.

Now free hosts don't have to have cgi, asp, php and junk. Many webmasters only want 1 thing---reliable connection and decent bandwidth. When one hosts fails, we move on. We learn to live with the ads, we just have to cut down on the amount of ads we put on our site. Many sites on paid hosts have just as many ads as we do(especially the ones that use exitfuel and such). Just be sure to get a relaible redirection URL. I use a top level domain redirect.

Some people do it as a hobby. Like, they're bored, and they decided to start a fwp.

You shouldn't do that. How else are you supposed to attract users? ;)

free hosts are useful for anyone who may want a personal or small business site. paid hosting is for some small companys and bigger companys. The only way most free hosts make money is off banners, pop-ups, and other ads.

Well, most paid hosts has a 30 day money back guarantee, don't they? That's sorta like trial testing, in a way.
