Hi
I'm looking for 1GB+ free webspace to use for our chemistry department website. I have been with ukfantastic until now but I would like to be able to FTP with broadband and they insist on dial-up via modem using their number.
If any kind person can suggest a solution for a free or cheap source that allows me to ftp with broadband I would be most grateful.
Regards

While I can't offer you free hosting, I can offer you cheap webhosting. Also if you want to be able to FTP to a server (which is what ours allow for) then all you need is a FTP client. I recommend Smart FTP. Its a free program for personel use. I love it. They just relesaed Smart FTP 2.0 and it runs and looks very nice.

Key phrase - I think your being held hostage to thier VISP.
They seem to have software for you to install (steer clear)

..and they insist on dial-up via modem using their number.
Really? That's pretty scary !!!
It's been a very, very long time since I've used an analog modem
and I think I'm starting to finally forget the misery that was 'dialup'
LOL :p

Ive had a look over their T&C's and they are NOT a free service going by item 5. - so they get revenue from the calls.
5. UK Fantastic will not permit FTP access to the user' web site or POP3 access to their e-mail from outside of its network. Further more direct SMTP connections from outside of UK Fantastic's network will also be barred.
They promote as an 0800 (free to call) service through their metetag entries for search engine robots
<meta name="keywords" content="0800 dial unmetered internet access uk dialup free call 24/7 BT provider ISP low cost cheap value"> in the UK illegal and can be dealt with by trading standards.
Still the question of why the educational establishment will not provide the service - unless their network is (understandably) isolated from the outside world for security.
I'm sure with the bit of extra 'explanitory' info someone will be able to help out, just wish I could at the moment - good luck Frank.
