would you people be happy with this plan:
20 MB
One pop-up per page (we're not millionaires here :p) forced if you do not place the pop-under code
PHP
CGI
SSI
FTP
Telnet/SSH
we will actually be enforcing the AUP if this plan comes into existence, and anyone who dares violate it will be terminated ASAP. all accounts will be verified by myself or my colleague.

popups generally get a bad response. what about a pop behind? The plan itself sounds good. What about transfer limits?

it's not much, but 400 MB a month. you can opt to get more bandwidth if you pay us a small fee. (we will charging approximately $2 per GB a month on free accounts.) also, you can get upgrades if you pay us including removing the ads.

What about MySQL?
And what would be the address? I suggest subdomain, it's more popular.
niv

Well, I could give subdomains a little later.
mySQL is often used for BBs only, and we will be banning the use of external connections for mySQL. (do you really want what happened to F2S to happen to us?) i guess if you want mySQL we'll downgrade your quota to 10 MB or something.
at some point, we may have to stop new sign-ups for a couple of hours or a day at most in order to get more servers, etc.
i can think that 95% uptime as possible, and during non-peak hours (i.e. 11 AM EDST - 1 PM EDST) will be used for upgrades etc. remember, all accounts are made by hand and we will be monitoring you. you can probably assume that hotlinking is definitely not allowed.
according to the response to this poll, i will decide whether free hosting will be a plan on my payhosting site. i expect at least 25 responses :p

Sounds pretty good Hayam.
Tell me if you decide to use that plan...

All I need MySQL for is a small PHP script, takes only 50k or something of MySQL space.
Will I be able to read a page from an other server? I need it for my script, it grabs data on a file from another server.
Well, I think it's going to be good.
Hope you will open and won't close.

i guess you could use mySQL, but it will require that you sacrifice some space, maybe 10 MB so you will have everything as before but you'll have 10 MB less.

That's ok, I don't need much space.

oh I see, so do you want me to provide 1% uptime and do you want me to go out of business within the first week? there are reasons that hotlinking is prohibited.

well I dont know about any of that,it's not my buisness that's at stake here, nor do I know or care what it takes to run a hosting service.I do understand to a point why some can't allow hot linking, but still this would be no benefit to someone who needs hotlinking.I don't know what other people do with their sites if they can't hot link, but I'm just saying that's what I have been needing for a long time, without having to pay for it.It's basically useless to me.Other than that I wish your buisness well and hope you prosper. :D

I think he wants several subdomains/usernames but the same space/bw as with one account. But I've been known to be wrong. :)

Is it possible to switch to banners, especially positionable ones?
Also, what would be your URL.
niv
August 4th, 2001, 10:39
we're still setting up, but it's a short 4-letter domain.
the URL will be username.****.net
we're switching the pop-ups with pop-unders.

you want no ads don't you? what if we don't make any revenue? you have to accept the fact that hosts can't run without money. f2s offers cable services, etc. in the UK. that's where they're getting their revenue from. what do you think happened to spaceports? people like you make me angry

Pop-ups and pop-behinds don't really bother me anymore. I've kind of grown use to them where i hang out. The only ones that really bother me are the ones without a title bar. Those get annoying to close.

August 4th, 2001, 13:03
make it like Hypermart
If you dont put in the inline banner ad code, you get a pop up.
niv
August 4th, 2001, 13:32
banner ads don't make much anymore, how about a pop-under for a pop-up :mad::p
Bonesgeo
August 4th, 2001, 16:52
pop ups ain't all that bad, as long as your not getting bombarded with them. At least once the ad is closed there's nothing on your page. Same with the pop behind. So that sounds good to me. After all, you have to make something or you'll just go under.

i don't know, but a pop-under would be nice. Pop-ups are sort of annoying, but if there small i could live with them
(like no ads that are 800x600, ugh)
