View Full Version : bandwidth prices

As a free host, keeping costs down is essential, however I have found that it works out cheaper to buy 2 1000gb bandwidth servers than one 2000gb bandwidth server! My host says this is becuase its expensive for the dc to set up, anyone care to elaborate?
For a rough idea of what I need
2x120gb hd's
2000gb band
100mb line
any processor/ram (must be reasonably powerful)
heres the killer,
I'm looking for quotes around this price...
$220
I realise this is completely unrealistic, but I just don't get why.
Thanks.
Note: Sorry netcafe, i didn't mention this earlier: Lots of sites would be put on this server, a 10mps line just won't cut the mustard.
Thanks anyway.

I apolozize if somehow the topic goes off-topic. But if you are willing to pay more than $150 per month I recommend find hosts with Unmetered Bandwidth. Because the space doesn't really matter that much but the bandwidth does. So, you might want to stay strong on the bandwidth side :).

it may be cheaper but you have to consider management/control panel/security and related items when doing 2 servers. if you do one server with 2000 bandwidth it will probably be really close to the same price as 2 servers but without the extra hassle

thats what i thought, due to cpanel being $30, however, the general quotes indicate that its cheaper to get two 1000gb servers. crazy.
avail, I looked through your site, 2000gb band is an extra $115, when the server costs $65. (and comes with 1000gb band anyway)
Im not criticising that, all hosts seem to be like that, I just don't get why.

it's actually because of the overselling really just like with shared hosting. Most dedicated server owners use under 200gb transfer per month so it is cheaper to sell on averages rather than actual usage. What you could also do, at least this is the way we do it at avail, is that you take the 1000gb bandwidth and pay for the exact overage you need, like you see the 1200gb is $75/mo more. overages are billed the same amount in each of the brackets you see there. so some months you may only pay $65/mo and some you may pay the full amount. overall it would be a savings unless you like to budget yourself the exact same amount each month.

they do linux as well and cpanel. the windows they prepackage because they work with a game control panel called tcadmin that is windows only. but they do linux and control panels as well
and there may be a hacking group called defcon but it isnt them. decfon is one of the oldest and largest gameserver providers with close to 100 game machines, really good to deal with and well respected in the industry

Defcon isn't a hacking organisation, it's a hacking convention, featureing mostly white hat hackers using there work for mainly positive stuff. Get your facts straight before you judge. :) It actually looks like quite the computer event to attend, in Las Vegas I believe. I believethere on Defcon 14 next year? Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyhow, it's nothing mailicious, but I was also curious as to why they'd take the name.
"A server with defcon? Umm I wouldnt. For everyone that doesnt know, defcon is one of the largest if not largest hacking/illegal groups in the us. www.defcon.org"
There's nothing illegal about it, they have tons of feds there too. It's just a way to share a common interest in essence. Most people don't understand hacking, they just think hackers are the one's trying to steal their credit cards. When in fact those people are not hackers, but just criminals. *Most* hackers use their knowledge for good.

utcrazy they are also a huge warez operator/provider. I knew people who had acces to their servers before. Dont see anything legal about distrobuting warez.

I highly doubt a hacking convention is connected to warez. Probably another lie fed from the ...... government and media. :) Aside from a lot of drinking, defcon is virtually harmless. I'm not going to argue about this though, either you know what defcon really is or you don't, simple as that. You either see the word hacker and think bad, or you see the word and think just a bit curious. Let me just make a real life example to help clear up my point. Someone who edits phpbb forum skins to look cooler is technically a hacker, and are those cool skins on phpbb bad? Of course not. That particular perosn just found a new use for something, that nobody else did.

yes they are a successful company and one of only a few companies that i will recommend. They have a great reputation and good products. I am not sure how someone jumped to the conclusion that because they happen to share a name with some hacking thing that they are scam artists.....thats how rumors get started and business's wrecked
research before speaking
