The registration shouldn't be to hard to get past.
Since it's for registered citiziens only, then that means they're probably going to chekc the name. This might be a problem after all...

They don't reply because you don't need an username or password in orden to modify your domain.
Follow this steps:
1. Use a Lybian name.
2. Place an European address.*
3. Register only one domain.
4. Wait a week.
5. Check WHOIS at http://www.lydomains.com/whois.asp
* I don't think they register a domain if you place an american address.

That's actually from a skit on Saturday Night Live some years back. The guest was Billy Connelly, a Scottish comedian, and he was playing the owner of a store called "'All Things Scottish' where our motto is: 'If it's not Scottish... it's CRAP!!!'". I used to have a .wav file of it until my old computer died.

If everyone can restrain themselves. I remember awhile back someone discovered that .mu domains were free to anyone who lived in Mauritius. So this person gave a fake Mauritius address. But he kept going and they eventually figured it out.

I have a difficult dilemma: Should I not try to get a .ly domain because itīs probably illegal, or for the fact that I donīt need one, or perhaps while I probably would lose it soon anyway. ;)
Anyway, Itīs Libya, *NOT* Lybia. (Unless someone changed the name of it while I was asleep :D )

August 31st, 2001, 12:27
technically it's not a free service for everyone. only for libyian citizens. whether they have the resources to check for legit libyians or not, who knows.
but there are people who are paying up to $500 for .ly domains through nic.ly strategic partners, so this is not peanuts compared to entering bogus information for a fwp.
LeX
August 31st, 2001, 12:33

Cyber
August 31st, 2001, 12:34

at nic.ly, i'm sure that if you check off "No" for "Are you a Libyan Citizen? Only Libyan citizens are entitled to free services", then they won't give it free. otherwise, you'll have to register thru the other strategic partners and pay.
and if you register through www.lydomains.com,
Registration fees are payable by credit card upon application. Customers registering large volumes of domain names maybe eligible for invoicing where payment is due within fourteen days after date of invoice. The billing contact listed in will be invoiced within seven (7) days of domain name registration by email. If payment is not received within thirty (30) days of the initial invoice the domain will be deleted and will immediately be available for registration by anyone.
In the event of domain name deletion due to non payment, the registration fees remain due and payable.
I don't think that the people who payed $$$ for a .ly domain are stupid. I think nic.ly is rather careless in managing the domains to let them slip away for free like that.
