View Full Version : Hosting advice for possible adult content

I'm shopping around for my first web host. I'm developing a site that will probably just have personal content (I just went on a trip around the world, so it will have a travelogue and lots of photos, plus collections of my other writings). So initially it will definitely be G-rated or at most PG.

But I'm also interested in erotica, so I may wind up wanting to post some sexually explicit stories. And I'm transgendered, and I have an idea of posting info about queer/transsexual issues. In my opinion, this type of content is not obscene, but I understand it's the hosting company not me that determines what is obscene (if that's part of the restriction in the AUP).

Should I include "allows adult content" as part of my search criteria for a good host? It seems like that's really going to narrow the prospects down, plus increase my costs. I don't think I'm going to need a lot of bandwidth, but with all the travel photos I might need around 50mb or more of disk space.

Any recommendations or advice? I'm thinking I should look for a host based on my primary considerations (reliability, customer service, $15/mo or less). And if I wind up adding explicit content later, to worry about where I'll post it then.

thx.

I agree, it is not obscene, but it may, for one reason or another, offend some people. You best bet would be to find a host, and once you have beccome a valuable customer ask about the stories/info stuff and if it would be allowed. chances are they wont mind. It may be a good idea to work something out before signing up too.

Hello,

Adult sites receive plenty of hits, so look for a plan that gives you a considerable amount of bandwidth.

Thanks for the replies.

I've been contacting several hosting co's and asking them to clarify what they mean by "obscene":

http://hostgo.com - any sexually explicit material is considered obscene
http://precisehosting.com - sexually explicit material is okay, if it's not depicting illegal acts (eg, child pornography)
http://valuablehost.com - still no response yet (query sent 1-1/2 days ago)

Final follow-up: I decided to go with precisehosting (http://precisehosting.com).

If I decide to post adult content in the future, I can upgrade to another plan with them (which is still pretty cheap).
