What is a Proxy Host?

I see requests in the forum above for people wanting to do proxy hosting. What is that?:confused4

Ok first you have to understand what are proxy sites?
Proxy sites are the means to access other sites, not directly but via that proxy site itself. These site acts as an intermediate to connect to actual sites. Proxy sites are primarily used to protect private information of your computer (Such as IP address) to be transferred to the site which you are viewing.
Suppose you want to access Google's site, In the proxy site you will type the site address (www.google.com) and start surfing as normal, but the actual process behind is something different
* The query you sent to the proxy site will be sent to target site (here goolge.com) >>>
* then the page which is returned by the target site will be fetched by the proxy site>>>
* Then the proxy site will make necessary changes in the page to remove the necessary parts to ensure privacy (like removing javascripts, cookies etc.) Then the formatted page is returned to your computer and the browser shows it.>>>
* Again if you click on any links or submit any forms on that page will be first fetched by the proxy site and then it will be sent to targeted site. As the final information is sent from proxy server, so the proxy server IP address is sent to target site not your actual IP>>> and this way the browsing continues.
See this proxy site http://www.tshake.com

Now there are some free proxy scripts are available, like PHProxy, installing these on a site can be used as proxy sites. Since these type of scripts take too much of server resource, most free hosts do not allow those.

Thats right, most free hosts and even paid hosts do not allow them because most datacenters do not either.. Every host should follow the DC's TOS. If your hosts allow proxy sites to be hosted, expect some slowness and downtime.

Probably the same as your own VPS. :)

Where to find it, I can dig up some offers. I'd reccomend getting a VPS though, as the price is probably about the same.

phproxy is an open-source, PHP script, which many folks use to provide their proxy services. :)
