control - alt - delete

Does anyone have any ideas why this happens.

Anytime I press control - alt - delete on my computer and close a program thats stalled my whole computer stalls and I can only get it back by pressing the reset button. i am running windows 98SE

I had the same problem before i re-formatted my computer and it's still here:(

Not sure if this is helpful, but are you waiting 10-30 seconds? The program, computer, and close function may hang for about that long until it actually closes.

I always had problem with that stupid task manager in Win98. I would use that to try and close a program, and then the task manager would be the thing to freeze and force me to restart.

Chicken: i've waited 5 minutes and nothing happens :(

Bruce: What did you do to stop it happening, if anything?

I upgraded to Win2k. :p That probably wasn't the answer you were hoping to hear though...

One thing that helped me in 98 is a RAM defragging program. You have to be patient and let it run though. Also, defrag your HD oftern.

And try to limit your multi-tasking.

Usually when I need to restart my computer ctrl alt del wont do it. all I'll get is a beep each time I try to restart.

So I have to give it the hard boot. Sometimes when its really locked up pressing the power button won't do anything.

sometimes control-alt-delete won't close a program for me on 98SE.

but of course xp is more responsive:p

With Win98 and it's poor memory management, I wouldn't recommend running any more than 5 programs at any one time.

98125 July 15th, 2002 11:45

oh well, are there any fixes/patches for this problem out there as microsoft.com doesn't give anything back

Canuckkev July 15th, 2002 12:08

Yes, to not multi task (that much). Or, try a RAM management tool.

guitarnerd July 15th, 2002 13:25

That is a pretty common problem with 9x/Me Windows OS's. There isn't really a fix for except to say upgrade to an NT based OS

GregT July 15th, 2002 13:53

i wish i could upgrade but i lost my xp cd and the only person i know wit 1 is on vaction :(
