Hmmm...the poll wouldn't work - 'document contains no data'

anyway...the reason is because it has windows. I mean, what else can they be called - boxes, rectangles?

You have too much time on your hands if that's all you've got to worry about.
By the way, why are M&M's called as such?

"Windows" is a very nice name for an OS actually. Too bad Microsoft's using it.

Think of it as windows to the world (of computers). It's also the window to your computer -- your files are now graphically displayed to you.

The poll works... and I think Bill Gates himself came up with the name.

Well I'm sure it's called windows because that's what it is, a whole bunch of windows that open up. It's all about windows. Click on this, a window opens, click on that, another window opens. Come on that should be obvious.

I remember Windows 2.0, then 2.1, which they changed the name to Windows 286. I do know that the original Windows came out sometime in 1983. I remember that because it was the year I became a teen (13). It came out, it seems, a few months after my birthday. I think Microsoft was created in 1980 or 81 sometime.

It wasnt going to originally be called windows. I have been trying all night to remember what the original planned name was till they changed it...I do remember thinking how "windows" was a far better name. I think the original name had two words in it (like "desktop helper" or something). Geez, I cant remember what it was..

probably the "Desktop helper" or something name was too long?

Maybe they encountered trouble when making the logo

If you know Microsoft, nothing is too long for them.

For example, what other company changes "cache" to "Temporary Internet Files" and what kind of crap name is "Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP" (Yes, that is what WM8 is called)

The real question is, since X Windows for Unix came long before Microsoft Windows, why did Unix insist on having the annoying "X" in front of it and leaving the better name for Microsoft to snap up?
