They look like little dots to me....

But once I have seen those question marks, I think it was on my dadエs laptop. But I donエt see them any more.

It's probably because if you're using XP, it is using Unicode or UTF-8 or whatever the hell that is instead of ASCII. :

Err...I don't see the dots when I use IME that is. I get a character that looks just like this: キ [use IME JP or Global IME JP to see what I'm talking about]

It's a Microsoft Windows thing. What it does, is basically give support for other languages while having the operating system based on the default. Right now, I have Windows 2000, which has support for any IME2000 or IME97 software, and I have installed IME2000JP, which unpacks Japanese fonts.

IME also comes in a version for 9x/ME, and that's Global IME, which works with Internet Explorer only.

I always see those ?'s. I even posted about it before - in fact, I still have the attachment image that I'll attach below.

It's just a problem with the encoding. What Peo used there is a special character that can only be seen correctly when using unicode to view it.

It's because the "middle dots" (I think they are called) is inserted with the key board (ALT + 0183) instead of their HTML equivalent ·.

Is this a new browser thing to put a question mark instead of a black box when it can't render a character?

In Mozilla at least, it sees those symbols and thinks the page is in unicode, which it isn't. To fix the problem, click View, move to Character Coding, and select "Western (ISO-8859-1)". The question marks will be replaced with mid dots. To prevent having to do that again, from the Character Coding submenu, move to Auto-Detect, and select "(Off)".

It was 2002. Duck avatars were the style at the time.
Long and fascinating story there. I'd tell you if I remembered it.

It depends on the encoding support you're currently using.

If I switch it to simplified chinese, it would change to News ? Search whereas when I use the normal Western European encoding, it displays News . Search fine.
