How do you pronounce the LIN in LINUX. Does it sound like Line-ux, or Lin(like the beginning of lint)-ux
-ADD Can you mods move this to general or delete it? thanks, I forgot I was in webspace, not general.

If you want to know why I asked this, it's because I pronounce it Line-ux, and when I called up my webhost, he didnt understand me when I asked him about the OS.

What happened to the N and how did the I turn into a U?I pronounce it as lu-Ucks
I think it was originally intended to be line-icks but the generally accepted pronunciation is lyn-icks.

Long and fascinating story there. I'd tell you if I remembered it.
It's pronounced lin-ux... lin rhymes with sin, ux rhymes with ducks, and if your ISP didn't understand what Line-ux was, he was either being intentionally obtuse, or was not computer savvy enough to be in tech support
I pronounce it lyn-icks.

Funny thing is, I was sick from school today and I was wondering exactly the same thing. I was gonna come here and post it.![]()

It's not exactly easy to spell the sound out. There is a hint of a U in the transition between "lyn" and "icks", but it's not enough to warrant being written. It's not a consciously made sound, it's just sort of what it sounds like when you make a short I after an N. The U doesn't go away, it's just very down-played.Li-nick? How does "u" become "i"?
