    Serverpronto.com (good?)

    Hi!

I will soon probably (2-3week) pay for my first dedicated server ever.
I don't get much money every month and doesn't want to spend all on a server every month. I can't run my own in my home because my other workstations are sucking all bandwith and using alot of electricity.

So a dedicated is just what i need.

I found Serverpronto.com yesterday and i like their AMD Starter which suits me perfectly. It will be used for an ordinary website and a small half-life2 editing site, maybe a forum (database might grow alot, hence i need a dedi) and running services like a IRC server.

I asked them alot of questions and they do allow IRC connections and so on, very nice.

The plan i might go with is: AMD Starter
    Specs:
    AMD Athlon 2000+
    256mb ECC DDR
    40GB HDD
    200GB Traffic/mo
    100mbps .US
    $69 setup fee, $29.95/mo
Free choice of OS (Debian will be my choice)
No firewall (i configure my own, IPtables ).

Do you think this hosting plan will suit me?
I tested their bandwith (downloaded a 21mb test file) and bandwith was decent (240kb/s) (i have 24mbps connection and lives in sweden, so speed to US isn't super, but hey its cheap in US!).

The IRC server im talking about is not a huge super IRC server. Its going to connect to a smaller net called irc.ipsource.net (which usually has only 10-20ppl as max). So im not talking about 1000-2000 users.

Try galaxy-solutions.net, you may get cheaper Dedis but they dont allow hosting of IRC unless you ask them in a special way ()

I've checked galaxy-solutions.net already, sure their servers are nice, but for the same price-range $25-30 i don't get better hardware, and i can't pay more than that monthly.

Support? When would i need support? I can manage the server on my own?

you need support if the server needs a hard reboot which is about the only concern really, and this is not a frequent thing so I wouldn't even worry much about that if you are familiar with running your own server. If you are not running a mission critical site the other things like hardware replacement SLA and o/s reloads will probably not come into play as much and if it's not lightning fast then so be it, $30/mo is AWFULLY cheap for a dedicated server

I seem to remember them not supporting IRC, so you might want to take that up with them and see what the verdict is.

Another thing to note is there cancellation policy, if I recall it is 30 days notice and this seems to be a sore spot with the clients.

I have already emailed them with questions, yes they do allow IRC if its small (like mine). The only thing that worries me a little is the cancel policy (but i won't quit there for a while ).

    What the?

I have a 8mbps connection, i'm in England and I get a good 400kbps to the SaidCom datacenter in PA (USA) (Where our servers are located)

Looking at the rate your getting - ServerPronto are not that good.
