Have them appraise the domain by a valid and known company such as Sedo and have them send you a copy of the appraisal.
Also, what method of payment are they asking for?
Hi,
I agreed to buy a domain name from a small company for 1k. The company seems relatively unknown (they have no reviews/info on Google.) I've never bought a domain name from someone else before.
1. What are there any important steps I should ensure in transferring the domain name?
2. The company is asking the payment first. Is there some simple escrow or other method to help in ensuring I wont get cheated?
Any help/info would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks

as dan said get it appraised
for payment use escrow.com, my friend used this for a domain as well and all went well

escrow.com is good unless you use TDNAM its like 5$ for each party + transaction fee but I haven't had a problem wit h them.
Sedo.com would be my choice. Its the easiest method if your not experienced in buying and selling domains.
They follow you step by step to what to do.
But of course it is not for free they do this. Generelly they take 10% of selling price, but depends on the selling price and your account type.
