What exactly are they trying to do here?
I'd love to post a youtube video, but... that's been frowned upon lately.
The Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld commercials... are designed to do what? I went to windows.com and watched the whole thing... and I've gotta say, I see no point in it. Theres another one in a shoe store... I dunno wtf is going on here.

It's all about brand awareness. Or is it?

It proves nothing about the Windows operating system though.. It literally just makes you ask stupid questions like the one I just posted.
...I'm part of their evil plan, aren't I? You're all gonna watch it, and now I'm helping Microsoft spread the word about... whatever it is they want you to know about them. ----.

It is there to make people aware of Microsoft.
It's like I go to the bus stop and the ad on it says "Company X" and a famous person (e.g. James Hetfield) is standing somewhere in the ad frame. This makes me think of Company X when I got home and crank up some Metallica. And since I am listening to music the chances are that I have access to internet so I look up Company X.
That's pretty much my 12k word marketing assignment in a nutshell.

I don't see why Microsoft needs to raise awareness of their company.

Sales are probably starting to slip based on Apple's retarded ads about how much Vista sucks. If Microsoft wasn't pretending to be nice, they could probably show a few exploits or something, and completely own apple for a few days.

They're trying to look more friendly...this is part of a series of episodes, down the road they'll start actually promoting Vista et al.

Well Microsoft, let's not forget, doesn't just do Windows, what about their phones, Zunes etc.
