It hard to be free of cost because usually old domain do charge in certain price on their value. Unless those domains in black list then they may just throw out for free.
Sometimes aged domains bring good amount of traffic along with it.
That if that domain were used for hosting some websites.
If the domain was just purchased and not pointing to anywhere, it won't bring any traffic anyway...
