Free Minecraft servers normally don't happen here or anywhere else, due to the fact that they require fairly substantial VPSs at the least.

To run minecraft efficiently, you require the following:
1GB RAM
20GB hard drive
100GB+ bandwidth, minecraft is very bandwidth hoggy
Linux is more efficient for a minecraft server, but they are not OS-specific.

Such a thing would be valued by most providers in the neighborhood of $15 or more, and there is no way for them to recover the costs of running it. Although you might find someone willing to sponsor it, such sponsorships are very rare. Not only that, but lately I've been seeing Minecraft servers getting the same kind of malicious attention that got IRC servers disallowed by a lot of providers- they sometimes attract low yield DDoSing or account hacking activity over in-game dramatics and trolls trying to destroy them. Apparently they are fast becoming a risky type of service to offer.
