Another Problem with my Comp...

Well, with my old Windows 98, I often had sporadic keyboard/mouse unresponsiveness spurts. However, I easily fixed the problem by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del and closing some files. Now, with Windows XP, pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del will bring up a list of only the OBVIOUS opened files...The ones hidden won't be shown. The only way to fix this problem is to turn off the computer, which is a real pain, considering I have to do that every 20 minutes or so. Any suggestions?

This doesn't answer your question at all but I simply have to ask, if the keyboard isn't responding how do you manage to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete?

OK...so I was exaggerating a bit. However, it does become slow and difficult to type. Sometimes, 40% of the words don't come out when I type (making it impossible for me to type long messages quickly). If I play a piece of music, it will have breaks in it. If I move the mouse, it will often be very choppy and stop every two seconds or so. The strange thing is that it takes about 20 min. before this "unresponsiveness" settles in. The computer works fine for the first few minutes or so.

Sounds to me like you have too many processes running at one time. Try minimising them. If you are not using some startup programs at the time of the problem like MSN, ICQ close them down.

Thanks Jan, but I have tried closing all the applications already...It hasn't had any effect, unfortunately.

Processor type (AMD or intel) and speed.
How much ram you have?
How big is your hard drive? How much free space is available?
Did WIndows XP come installed? Is it XP Pro or Home?
How many programs do you *normally* have opened when this error/problem occurs??

I'm on a different computer at the moment, so I'll just tell you what I remember.

Did WIndows XP come installed? Is it XP Pro or Home?
No, Windows XP did not come installed. It was a version that my dad got at the APEC conferences. It's XP Pro.

How many programs do you *normally* have opened when this error/problem occurs??
Generally 3-4 programs are open. Even after I close them, I have this problem.

In XP, when you press ctrl-alt-del, a dialog box comes up with several tabs on it. Click on the "Processes" tab to see everything that's running. The "Applications" tab doesn't show very much... As you said, just the obvious ones.

wow, this sounds familiar...

the last time i had problems like this, i ended up replacing my HDD 3 weeks later (and losing ALL my files).

if u have a lot of time to kill, try to run a THOROUGH scandisk to see if that helps

also freeing up ur hdd space would help definitely!

Sounds like you have too many things loaded in the ram. But it seems from your responses to not be the case. I have seen this problem with a few computers, and I would probably recommend installing a new mouse/keyboard driver, or re-installing the current one. It could also be your motherboard, not responding correctly to the input signals. Make sure your plugs are clean.

And as said earlier, you can still close individual applications running in your ram from ctrl alt delete by just going to the processes.
