I'm not a big fan of these pre-built systems.

If it's a must to buy a pre-built one though, both http://falcon-nw.com and http://voodoopc.com are great if you happen to have that kind of cash... big if there though...

The best brand is one you build yourself. Period.
No sh!t & no spyware to send secret info about you to the company that sold you the parts. Plus it's usually cheaper than prebuilt systems.

I built my own computer... you just gotta be careful not to zap out any... but you can put the best of the best in when building your own. You won't have to hassle with big brand name companies who put in cruddy video or sound cards, or a bad hard-drive, like Dell, Gateway, etc.

You can go to PC Mechanic's tutorial at pcmech.com (should be on the front page or on the "Build Your Own..." page). There are certainly others on the Web too...

Google Search: Build Your Own PC

..but I suggest brushing up on computer terms or you might be stuck with an outdated tutorial.

just don't forget those little washers when you put your motherboard on. Really your main concern with static is your MOBO, So just where one of those little bracelet things and make sure you use non-magnetic tools. The best thing to do is go buy a computer tool kit, I would reccomend Belkin from Tigerdirect.com they make good tool kits

You are absolutely right. I had to send a motherboard back because of that mistake, and the company (newegg) was nice enough to give me a replacement.

To remove static just touch a metal object before you open your case. And wear something rubbery on your foot.

Yup, the best brand are built-by-you... but make sure all the parts are compatible and that there are enough spaces that everything doesn't overflow into other card's IRQs.

I like DELLs desktops and Compaq I believe... HPs are sort of nice, but their opening doors on their CDRW/DVD players are bad/dangerous!

Very true. I definately wouldn't recommend anything under 350 watts.

I'm quite amazed at what my 100 watt is still capable of.
