unless you can get your hands on partition magic, you'll have to format it and partition it from dos.
unless you can get your hands on partition magic, you'll have to format it and partition it from dos.
its not too complicated, just open a MS-DOS dialog and run fdisk. Problem is that if you make a single tiny error, your whole drive is screwed and you will have to reformat.
that's something you're gonna have to pay for, or in my case, be fortunate enough to have a computer guru for a friend. it's not as easy as typing in "format a drive called 'd:' for me, computer. thank you very much."
Step 1: Know that jw is making an error (sorry). As fdisk will trash (reformat is another term for this) any partition that you mess around with.
Step 2: Get Partition Magic or System Commander. These are the only programs I know of that can modify partitions without destroying your data. From experience, I can tell you that System Commander is just plain annoying to use as it isn't meant to be a partitioner, but rather a thing that lets you install different Operating Systems. Partition Magic works in Windows, so that may help.
Step 3: Read the manual.
Step 4: Try it out.
Step 5: Consult us if you require help.

The only way with out loosing your information you have now is with partition magic or a program like it. I have heard of people using fdisk but that usually leads to corruption.
Now if you want a step by step of what to do with a new clean drive I could easly do that for you just ask.

If it can't be done with fdisk, i'd like to know how I did it...
You did it without modifying/deleting your data in any way?

Hmm...is partioning worth it? I don't know much about it, just that if I ever wanted Partition Magic, I'm sure I could find it somewhere... Does it make a big difference? I'm always downloading lots of stuff, then deleting it (like mp3's). Just wondereing wht you people think.
Partioning *might* be worth it, but if there really isn't a need for it, then I say there's no need to go through the trouble.
Like, my dad split up our HD and gave me my own drive (D) and told me to save all my junk there and don't mess with C: drive, 'cause all his files are in there. I suppose this is an advantadge, because I can save whatever I want in D: and my dad doesn't bother to peek. But if a folder called "junkie" or something like that was to appear in C:, he'd most likely go and take a look and see what the folder "junkie"'s doing there... if something that's not supposed to be in there is in there, then I'm busted.![]()
it can help by keeping all the applications & games & stuff out of the c: drive so it doesn't totally frag out windows.
i've got it set up so drive c: is nothing but windows, d: is simply a 400 meg swap drive [rather than virtual memory], e: was the "server" drive, but now it's just storage, f: is programs & utilities, g: is games, h: is files & storage as well.
really helps to keep windows running smooth
I prefer creating subdirectories. Partitioning is hard to undo.
