    Wink Why Can't I close my CD-ROM?

um, yeah, I suppose the question is pretty self explanatory, but I guess I'll go into this anyway. I plopped the latest version of Photoshop into my CD-ROM to install it. Upon closing it, I quickly learned that it did not want to close, that the light would flash for a few seconds before opening the drive up again. Naturally, this sucks ---. So I just tried to keep it jammed shut, which would eventually work, but then it wouldn't read the CD. So then I did the most brilliant thing possible. I tried to close it after I turned it off. (I know). Now there was no CD in it at this point, so I don't know if it would have read anything. I doubt it, but in any case, now I couldn't get the damn thing to open. I essentially jammed it in there. Well, I finally got it open after learning about the whole manual open thing...but now I can't get it to stay closed again. We've gone full circle. I would really like to install Photoshop. How the hell do I keep this thing closed, while it will still read the CD?

heh heh, the one case where the universal solvent won't work. It'd keep it closed, but my computer won't read the disc.

on my pc, if i have left the drive open, it will usually close itself after power down or restart

try another cd, a music cd maybe...maybe the cd you are trying to insert is dodgy

are you on windoze? right click the cd-rom drive from the icon in my computer or explorer and select "eject"

i know these points are simple and moronic, but you've tried bashing it and it won't work...try being nice to it

    good luck
So you take me for what I am, a psychopathic, schizophrenic, serial killing femme fatale?

I would suggest taking the CD back to the store and saying that they sold you a shonky version of Photoshop, get a replacement or a refund!

    I'm with Jan.

Shonky CDS will do things like that....

Okay, maybe I just wanted to say "shonky" cause it sounds cool.

i opened it and did it myself.(cant explain exactly how coz dont know technical termins).

It's definitely not the CD. Other discs do the same thing, audio CD's too. I actually tried your suggestions alreasy n7of9. I thought it was working, but it would actually just keep the drive close for maybe 5 seconds more. I think I'll open this thing up and snoop around a bit

My computer had the exact same problem... I just took out my cd, rebooted a couple times and then it would still pop open, but then i'd reboot again, it popped open again then I put a cd in it then i closed and read it.. Does that make sense

Anyway, I never found a way to fix it, it kept doing it every once and a while, but since my new computer, I dont need to worry

Do you have any programs running at windows startup that might cause this? Try disabling any programs that would access the CD...

Also, have you tried outside of windows? Like, if you boot to a command prompt from a boot disk, then tried opening and closing the tray? If it doesn't work still, you have a wonky drive.

Did you try without any CD at all in there?..?

If you wanna pay for all my bills, then fine.

Kev, what kind of programs might these be? I"m not sure I have anything that would require it's use, but you never know. I haven't tried anything outside of Windows, although I kinda have a feeling you're right, and it's just a ----ed up drive.

when you have to pay for car insurance, cell phone bills, gas, Christmas presents, etc etc etc, you learn to hold onto a $20 when it comes your way.
