Get the Indeo codec ( http://www.ligos.com/indeo.htm ) and if it still won't play, download a DivX codec.
Took 2 hours to download
Anyway, when I try and open it, it says
Windows Media Player encountered an unkown error.

Sorry, no more help is available for this problem at this time.
Sooo...none of you would happen to know anything about this would you?

Get this program called GSpot and identify which codec you need to play the file.
BSPlayer is another option - haven't found a thing yet it won't play
If you can hex read the avi then there should be a RIFF code that id's which codec it was created with.
Or easier right click on the avi and go to properties - it might just tell you in there
