Anyway, when I try and open it, it says
Windows Media Player encountered an unkown error.

I clicked web help but all that gave me was this:

Get this program called GSpot and identify which codec you need to play the file.
BSPlayer is another option - haven't found a thing yet it won't play![]()
If you can hex read the avi then there should be a RIFF code that id's which codec it was created with.
Or easier right click on the avi and go to properties - it might just tell you in there![]()
