    ----ty 16 bit colours

Hi, look at the header on top of my website here: http://www.smilies.uni.cc/

view it in 16 bits and you see that the gradients are not smooth... Is there a way to smoothen it? In 32 bit it looks fine.

Heh. backup a second, you're not thinking about this. NO image will look good at 16 bits, it's that simple (unless the original image is a very simple one, with less than 16 colours to start with).

16 bit images have only a 16 colour palette. That means, the computer will select 16 colours that best represent the colours of the image. If you're using a bad program, it will have preselected tables that will probably match even worse.

So, save the images at a higher bit rate.

If I reduced my display down to 16 bits, everything would look bad, (except maybe windows, which does surprisingly well, because it's made of simple colours).

Any gradients, detailed pictures like photos, or images with complicated colour will be 'dithered' under 16 bit, which means it will use dots to try and reproduce the gradient. Because it has so few colours to work with though, the difference betweent he colour of the dots will be more noticable.

No one should view your website at 16bit, so there shouldn't be a problem either way. If they do though, they'll be used to seeing all images like that, so it won't make your site look bad.

    Does that make sense ??

I thought 16 bit had 65k colours? Why is that 16? Strange though, the gradient at http://trenzterra.yupapa.com works!

Nevermind. Problem seems to happen only with JPG gradients.
