    help with changing operating systems

i'm new to this, so i'm not sure if anyone has ever asked this but,

i have windows server 2003 installed on my computer and i want to downgrade it to windows me, (because my software doesn't support windows 2003 and i want to change it to windows me, not xp) but i don't know how to. i'm not a computer expert, so i need step-by-step instructions on how to do so. the thing though, i have ms-dos 6.0, but i don't know how to use it or the commands to type, and i have a [windows me] cd. i guess i have the materials (do i have all the materials needed?), but i don't know how to use them. can someone help me? it would be greatly appreciated.

and also, i've heard about booting and formatting, but i don't know what it does or means exactly. can someone explain this to me? in simple terms?

Generally, Microsoft has not set up it's OS's so that you can "downgrade." If you want "to go back," this usually means reformatting (completely erasing your "old" OS) and installing a new one from scratch. It also means reinstalling all your programs from scratch. Any DATA you want to keep has to saved (either in an external format, i.e. CD's or ZIP drives) or put on a separate drive or partition from the one you are reformatting.

Lex's comment about WinME means -- "WinME was probably MS's worst version since Win3.11" -- a pretty commonly held opinion. If you can get a full version of Win98SE, you'd be better off than putting on WinME.

(Speaking of MS embarrassments -- does anybody remember MS-DOS v4.0? It was so bad, MS didn't even try for a v4.1 -- they went right to v5.0. I always kind of lumped WinME in with MS-DOS v4.0.)

There is no way to downgrade your OS to Windows ME. The only way to do this is do a backup of everything and reformat your computer and install Windows ME.

Use a bootable disk or cd to boot to dos.
    fdisk or format c: drive
if you fdisk, reboot and boot into dos again.
than pop the Windows ME cd in and type 'install'

Most applications you have on Windows ME would probably work with Windows 98SE. Windows ME is buggy and wouldn't bother with it.

I think you should call up Microsoft for more information. If you really did buy Windows 2003 which cost around thousands, call them up. Just make sure you have the key and box detail with you as they will ask you for that to see if you actually bought it. They will also ask you to read whatever is on the Windows 2003 CD.

    format your computer
winME really doesn't help solve problems but create more problems

step by steps (is it understandable?)
    1. put in the windows start up disk
    2. restart your comp
    3. boot into dos
    4. use the fdisk command to go to the partition screen
    5. remove your partition
    6. create a new partition ( or 2 if you want several hds shown in "my computer" )
    7. install winME to a partition with enough space ( i hope you don't install winME into a 800MB partition )

then, if you don't have 2 os, i think winME will boot automatically after you install it.
