Domain name registration & Web hosting (what's the difference?)

Hi,

Things I don't understand:

1- What is registering a domain? Don't web-hosting sites give you your domain or subdomain name when they host your website? will it be necessary to register your domain name after it's hosted by a web-hosting company?

2- As an example, let's take "optinom" (a domain-names registration company) assuming that I don't have a website yet (actually, without assuming I don't have one yet), I go and register my own domain name at optinom domains, so what? What do I have now after I got my domain name registered? Will I get a storage space for hosting my website as I register my domain name at a domain-names registration company or I'll just get the NAME? Are registering a domain and hosting a website two separate independent processes?

3- Some domain registering sites say that after registering my domain, I will be able to use my own nameservers. What is "my own nameservers"? What can I use them for?
How bad is my knowledge?

OK this is kinda hard to explain but ill try anyway.

when you register the domain you register (to your name) a short domain like www.example.com or www.example.net ,etc, etc.

Although most registras will offer free parked domain nameservers (which is just a 'coming soon' page) they will not offer free webhosting.

Nameservers are what host the domain name. With DNS (Dynamic Name Servers) you can add email accounts, subdomains, Cpanel and other extras like that.
nameservers are usually dns1.example.com and dns2.example.com.
You can add domain names to nameservers, which you have to set as well on the registrants control panel.

Web hosting is when the hosting company (often paid) hosts the files on your domain name. They offfer the nameservers usually as well.

well,it depends ... if your webhost's package comes with a domain then they would register it for you. if they dont, well just buy a domain at www.godaddy.com

Once you registered, you need to redirect that domain to your host by entering in valid DNS information provided by your hosting company

3- Some domain registering sites say that after registering my domain, I will be able to use my own nameservers. What is "my own nameservers"? What can I use them for?

If you have a reseller account. Your webhost might be able to create a personal nameservers for you.

eg.. ns1.yourdomain.com
ns2.yourdomain.com

If I had my website hosted by a web hosting company under the domain name: www.aaa.com, and I registered another domain name (www.yyy.com) at a different, domain name registration company, would I be able to use the address "www.yyy.com" to refer to my website hosted by the first company instead of the original one "www.aaa.com" and keep my website hosted on the first company? How to, if yes? Or I would be able to use both of the addresses; "www.aaa.com" and "www.yyy.com" to refer to my website?!
