What? The Internet is now the communal soapbox?
Oh wait, it has been for a long time now![]()
At the first Congressional hearing on this subject in years, members of a House subcommittee uniformly knocked out the proposal to lift the 14-year-old ban on using cell phones in flight. Cell phones on-board were banned in 1991 in USA. The reason was a probable interference of cell phone with the aircraft's communication and navigation systems. It is the opinion of many people that in spite of warnings and earnest requests, many passengers continue to use cell phones during the flights, simply disquieting the peaceful environment in the aircraft. Moreover, the digital cell phones are too risky as these can be used as guns and signaling device for terrorist’s activities.
A deep contemplation on this issue reflects in a comprehensive article published at the following link: http://www.weblobbying.com/Lobbies/default.asp?Lid=332
People should be more alert about the usage of cell phones on flights and may be the article can throw some light on the same perspective.

I'll just say this. If you make a call on a plane; its not gonna suddenly fall out of ths sky.
The only thing we have to fear; is fear itself.

Unless that call was to heavens to smite it or something.Originally Posted by Dean

I never knew GSM or any other cell phone network signals reach up there...especially in the middle of the Atlantic...
I mean I'm going to Europe in a 2 weeks, I doubt I'll get a signal even if I tried up in the air.
In an everlasting search for low pings.
I don't think the arguement is about cell phone usage while in mid air over the ocean, but more about domestic flights.Originally Posted by Daniel

Regardless, I don't think it'll work even over domestic land. I don't think cell phone signals reach that high. Or do they..

They sure do. When my previous job sent me to NY for a weekend, I was on my cell in mid flight in a meeting with the directors in NY. My plane was late so I had to do the meeting in the air. Thankfully I was in business class and nobody cared.Originally Posted by Daniel

Yeah - Try to listen to FM radio on your next flight. I was reciving Hobart's Seafm from about 350 km's away

Hmm. I'm not sure of the exact legalities in Australia... I do know it's a federal crime to use your mobile during refuelling.... but the fact is Dean, that while you are on a plane you must abide by the airline's rules. If you use your mobile when they've asked you not to then you're an idiot, and a criminal because you cannot abide by even the simplest laws.Originally Posted by Dean
I reckon anyone found with their mobile switched on on a plane should have a year or so ban from flying again on the airline, and a fine of maybe $800-1000. They were warned it can cause issues with the navigation system. Airlines don't go out of their way to tell you because it's harmless.
My friend is a pilot and if you tell him that he will absolutely bombard you with all the reasons you're careless and thoughtless, to deliberately and maliciously put others in the plane in risk, and to be the cause of possible equipment failure. Why on earth would you just break the law, possibly interfering with flight equipment while in use just so you can make a phone call?Originally Posted by Robert

Flights are already unenjoyable enough without people talking on cellphones.
I vote Meksilon for member of the month.
Gayo has a point, though; and I think that's the actual reason why airlines don't want people using their mobiles on the plane. Can you imagine how much that would suck? Especially considering how loud some people would think they need to talk to be heard over the roar of those massive engines, and the groaning of the people sitting next to them.
