How DO I make my Own web hosting server?

How can I make my own web hosting server.
I'm not really looking to make money, I'm just very interested in learning how to do it.

I know about Apache and stuff - I thing. All I do is install it onto a computer right?

Can any body explain to me how to do this,
And I mainly want to know, if I set up a temporary computer in my house to work as a server, how would I go about connecting it to the Internet so that people can use it to put there websites up?
Would an ADSL connection be good enough?
Or will this turn out to be very slow, if too many people tried to access the site to use it???

What type of connection is recommended, to allow the server to work as any other server?

Any information would be helpful, the more detailed the better.

    Thanks

    Anayet

if you want to be a truly dedicated webhost, i suggest you build a server and colocate it at any of the several NOCs around the world, like tera-byte, burstNET, etc. You can use standard stuff like Apache, CPanel3, a WHM, and *nix (i.e. Red Hat, FreeBSD).

NOC is network operator center. These guys maintain the network for you and you pay them some fees to plug into their network for bandwith for your server.

basically a server requires an OS recommended Linux/FreeBSD

    a webserver - Apache

and other tools like mysql , perl etc etc

Do you want to host just ur site on a computer then your computer will be fine for a low traffic site. minimum is ADSL or high speed cable modem.

If you want to be the next free webhost I suggest you buy/lease a dedicated server from the various hosting companies.
