Is this going to be to Open-source? If so, what language?
Hi,
I'm trying to make an Instant Messenger system that's better than ICQ, MSN, and AIM all put together. A developer quoted me at $2,000 for this. I'm looking for this to be a donation-based project. If anyone wants to donate any amount of money to this, just reply if you're interested. All donations are gladly accepted. You'll be listed on the main site as one of the co-founders of the system, and this would look great on a resume or portfolio.
I've done my research, and added a ton of features to this. It will have all of the perks that the other instant messengers have to offer, plus many other cool features. It WILL be better than the others if we can raise enough money. We can bring this up to be as popular as the others. Many people will switch over because it can import buddies from AIM, ICQ, MSN, and even IRC. We'll see Webcam support and lots of other cool stuff as well.
I started begging an hour ago, and so far I've gotten $22.50. After enough money is raised, the project will take about 1 month to develop.
I'm also still not sure what the name of it will be. If anyone has suggestions, let me know.

Probably not open-source. It will be in English but who knows, we might do international versions in the future.

Trillian looks like it just brings all the messengers into one interface like CheetaChat. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.. my system will be its own message system with all the features that I mentioned. It will just be easy to import contacts from the other messengers and chat with them while they're using other chat clients.
Hmm... So you're basically adding one more protocol to an already huge list of different IM standards?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like a Trillian that supports one more standard...

Not one more IM protocol. Why are you making this. Instead of starting from scratch maybe you may want to contact the makers of Trillian and help them in the development. They have planned a number of things and I'm sure they would aprreciate any monetary or coding help.
BTW own protocol+other im's =Odigoit already does this .
That sounds awfully bloated to me. What's the use of an IM that is as heavy or heavier than an email client? But what do I know? I'm no fan of IM. I could be though if someone invented an IM that would show who's online, could communicate with all other IMs and keep a short history exportable to a text file. No other features.
