Get rid of the Volcano7 and get a SLK-800 or Swiftech with a panaflo fan.

Don't bother using PC2700(333mhz) RAM if the processor isn't running at that FSB. You'll get better performance if you use PC2100 with a 2100+.

And don't get the Epox board as it uses Via KT400 chipset(It wont work with your SB 5.1 soundcard). Get an Nforce2 + 2600+(333mhz FSB)+ PC2700 RAM and your system will kick ---.

If you want an Epox mobo, I would suggest teh 8RDA to you. The 8RDA uses teh nForce2 chipset which is far superior to teh KT400.

You can see the rest of NewEgg's nForce2 boards here: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...roperty&DEPA=1

The Thermaltake Volcano 6Cu isn't really any better than the one that comes with the retail processors. You may want to get a heatsink with a fan that pushes a little more air, but if not, you might as well just drop it and use the one that comes in the retail package.

Teh retail AMD HSFs aren't too bad if you don't plan on overclocking. I'm actually using teh retail HSF and I have my 1700+ (1,466MHZ) @ 1,650MHz (150 * 11) though.

What temps? I'm currently using stock cooling and getting 49-50 deg C idle and up to 55-59 full load.

Before wire clean-up:
idle: 60&degC
load: 69&degC

After wire clean-up:
idle: 46&degC
load: 55&degC

What a difference that made. My temps are even lower still if I leave the side off. My case has a real lack of airflow going in, so I think I'll have to do something about that...

How do you find the temperature inside your system? I do movie encoding and it constantly uses 100% CPU power. I just don't want to fry my CPU.

Generally your motherboard will come with some tyoe of hardware monitor. Mine came with Winbond Hardware Doctor. You could also use a 3rd-party program such as Motherboard Monitor (Google it), but I could never get it to work for me.

Alternatively, you could look in your BIOS as startup.

Dude, get like a dremel or some rotary metal cuter and add some case fans.

Yeah, I know. The front fan isn't doing a whole lot of good with only a 1/4" opening under the front bezel.

I think this 172mm fan will work nicely on teh side. Mmmmmm... 250 CFM. Just remind me to keep my finger away from that beast.

I forgot where or why I heard this, but I've been told to avoid HDs that aren't either 40GB or 80GB in capacity...

I think a more valid suggestion here would be to not get a 5400rpm hard drive.

Get 2 of those and RAID 0 them. That'll be your best option. The performance of the drives would be somewhere around that of a SCSI ultra160 drive.
