Changing registration location

Hi,

A friend of mine (who knows even less about the internet than I do!) registered a domain name with a company last year. He has just got the bill to renew the registration for the coming year and showed it to me. It is way more than I have ever paid for a web address. Is there anyway of changing whom he is registered with i.e. to a cheaper company in order to save him a lot of money in the future?

Thanks in advance.

i guess after your friend gets his domain renewed, ask him to
transfer his domain to a cheaper and better registrar. as for the
transfer fees it's up to the company. some transfer for free while some charge for a one time fee

So he does have to renew his registration with the expensive company before he can transfer to another registration company? Any recommendations about companies to transfer to? A re-direct service would be desirable if it were cheap or free but not essential.

Thanks.

i'm have not encountered any domain transfers so i'm not so sure about this.

but i guess you have to do it with the current registrar since they are still managing the domain for renewal.

No. you can renew with *anyone*. Find a cheaper registrar then transfer the domain thru them. Just leave enough time (bare mimimum 2 weeks - preferably much more) before it expires. Don't wait, do it now, transfer can take less than a week but it could be longer. If you renew with the existing regisitrar then you have just signed up for 1 more year at the higher price.

People here like www.namecheap.com at $8.88, i like www.000domains.com $13.50 and www.myostrich.net who advertise at top of page are also good $14.99

But be aware that if they are charging a very high price, they may have a transfer fee as well. What company is it? As stated, many registrars will transfer your domain for free, but some will charge a very high transfer fee.

The transfering process adds another year onto the domain, so if you go with one of the cheap registrars listed, it will cost <10$ + whatever your current registrar charges for transfers, and you will have the domain for another year before having to renew it.

??? I transfered a domain from Network Solutions to 000domains and paid only the $13.50 renewal fee (includes tranfser & 1 year extension) to 000domains. NetSol did not charge anything to transfer away from them.

loosing registrar can not want any fee for the transfer. this is not legal. :D
And what makes you think this?

The losing registrar can, and some do, charge a transfer away fee. There are no ICANN regulations for what fees can and cannot be charged for any services related to domain registration.

Changes in registrant (ownership) and changes in registrar (transfer) have had many different business models at many different registrars.

Most do not charge for either, but some do, and you would be wise to understand the fee structure for any registrar before you purchase a domain from them, or transfer a domain to them.

thewitt can you give an example for those which charge a fee for the transfer so we know which one to stay away

I'm sorry sense, I cannot. Since I sell domains, it would be bashing my competition...

There used to be a site with all the registrars "hidden costs" or other surprises on it, but I seemed to have lost the bookmark and cannot find the site again!

ok thanks

I think ICANN really does not do what it has to ! charging a fee for the transfer can not be accepted in my opinion
