CPanel

What's so wrong with cPanel? I've tried helm (sucks), Plesk (great for windows servers), and cPanel, and I'd choose cPanel over them all. Also, for the smaller hosts Xpanel's great. One reason I recently discovered that a control panel is useful: for remotely managing your site. I know that may sound dumb, but the pc I was using didn't have any FTP software on it, and I didn't want to download FTP software. Also, it's handy for de-compressing files onto the server.

By the way, what idiot asked for this?
i demand this stuff plz
10Gb space for my mps and exe's
120GB bandwith
cPanel
Fantastico
bleh, i hate ads

i want this quick yall. gimme.

10gb of space? Whoa. 120gb of bandwidth. How could a single normal site possibly use 120gb bandwidth? I guess serving out a bunch of illegal MP3's and using some one else's server as a file host.

Actually it has to do more with laziness. Most applicants these days
are either too stupid or too lazy to install applications manually
themselves so Cpanel w/Fantastico remains in high demand.

It's the same trend in hosting applicants not wanting to post or
anything else to get hosting ... again just simply laziness.

Oh and while we are on that topic, the whole entire point of
"posting for hosting" is not to make the host any money or
keep their forum populated but rather instead to simply serve
as an artificial population control to prevent the rate of
hosting signups from exceeding the natural growth rate
of the host. Any host that just blindly accepts every
application that comes their way without any kind of
fixed population control is doomed to certain failure
right from the very start.

It's because too many kids around actually DO give it away and when we can't or refuse to, we look bad.

That is true. But then look at the amount of these "kiddie hosts" that last more than 6 months, or even a year . . . hardly anyway. They generally do NOT know what they are doing. They do NOT know what resonable limits are, and they do NOT understand that they are actually ruining the business for everybody else who is legitimate. They give everybody a bad name because so many hosts are "down all the time" and they "do not provide good support" or they "dissapeared without notice" etc. Just because some teenager gets an allowance of $20 per week, they think they can just own the world and offer unlimited space to anybody who asks for it.

Actually, I think that "post to host" is more than fair to those who want free hosting. I mean, you don't have to actually pay anything, and all you are doing is dedicating some of your time. It really is a good way to weed out those who arent really worth the time and effort of creating an account. I see so many requests anymore that say "I will NOT post to get an account." If I was the host offering the free space and I saw that, I would say to myself "Then go to hell. If you can't dedicate some of your time, then you are not worth mine."

I see the advantages in Post for Host, even income wise, but my opinion is who wants to run a forum, along with a host, and use a forum for support outside of your ticket system? Wayyyyy too much going on ... my members post in my forum, just for the helluvit, of course, because they enjoy it... but I could never imagine monitoring all of them to insure they meet their requirement to keep the account. Lol either PAY or live off the ads, ya know? Hey Cancer10 nice Avatar ;)

Thats true, I agree with you. I personally would not use that method either, but I was referring to a hypothetical situation. :)

My 2 cents. I think they need at least a dedicated server not a reseller account to offer any reliable service. Many "kiddie hosts" don't have a good business plan and fold very soon. We need a company with good financial backing, it's terrible to switch hosts every few months or even weeks.

I am sure that many clients also feel the same as you. But if that is the case, then why do so many people fall for the nonsence regardless?

You should know that forums are free game in the legal department.

My first time here, I was looking for a host for a blog site, and to my surprise I read this post.

First I'd like to say I enjoyed the whole conversation even if certain people got over heated about this topic It was a good exchange of ideas. I especially enjoyed how all the "older" hosts are on their soap boxes telling everyone how the business should be run, and to some extent I totally agreed, you don't want the market to be flooded with inexperience and cheaper offerings that are impossible to compete with since they are fictional.. But I did find it amusing that in between your tirade about "free hosting" and how a business is run and profits and everything else, as soon as someone talked about a script all of you older host jumped up and and were requesting a PM with the script, I especially enjoyed what <hottweelz> said "If anyone can send me that script, I'd like to see it, perhaps use it's potential, is it free?". You have to love the irony of that statement when you are complain about FREE web hosting. You might say scripts are usually free, and I might say today, but 15 years ago not so much (Proprietary Rights), since so many of you seem to be stuck on the nostalgia of the olden days.

But the reason why I wanted to get into this discussion was that I just reviewed some of the information on Deeplist's webpage, after reading some of his "Asian" comments here and I'm sure he will happy to note that I have informed my colleges in the Ohio District Attorneys office and I hope they will be contacting him and his legal department soon.

I think I'll just stick with Blogger for now.

What is that supposed to mean?

I offer free hosting, handpicked, only for FWS members. I would be interested in a script that I could utilize for my Forum Moderators to use. It would not be publicly available, in fact it would be password protected.

Most open source scripts are free and are quite high in quality, however some cost $$ (which I have plenty of) and still being interested, would have gladly paid for it if it was worthy.

No one is complaining about Free Hosts, we are complaining about Unprofessional Free Hosts.

Enjoy Blogger.com they are very good, for Blogs.

I don't know what this guy's deal is. I don't know what the purpose of mentioning that he has notified this "colleges" at the DA's office. I guess I should have checked into those colleges when I was considering schools a few years ago. What a jerk.

Here's the difference between free hosting and free scripts: Hosting Costs Money! to keep the server running, to mange the site, for the domains. Scripts cost no money to make.

Scripts can indirectly cost money to make. If you buy Zend Studio or some other piece of development software, that costs money.

But, yeah, hosting costs money, scripts generally do not.

He is probably a bear with a sore --- because I do not accept business from people located in China. I have had negative experiences in the past. I do not understand where he comes into the picture, but just like any other business, I can refuse service to whomever I choose.

If you make scripts professionally, you usually don't need a hand-holding tool like that.

I use it to cut down on the time it takes to debug. Zend can run PHP internally without the Apache server running. That keeps Apache more occupied (in my case) serving out pages than running my scripts to debug.

Any level of programmer makes errors. It's the severity and amount of errors that distinguishes between an expert and novice.
