That is what I try to explain to people. It is not like we just sit here on the computer all day and do nothing but manage a server. The majority of us actually do other things in addition to hosting.

The teenagers on the other hand get their reseller accounts and then they have all day after school to go around and brag about their "excellent" services, and how fast their servers are. They post datacenter images and photos of expensive servers on their homepage to try and trick the ignorant consumers into thinking they are a top dollar opperation. And that is what really pisses me off more than anything else.
Yes, this is also pissing me off. I've been around here for a long time and recently started my own hosting service, with, yes, a reseller. Why? Not because I don't know anything about how the thing works, or how linux works or whatever, but because starting a webhosting business with a dedicated server is ridiculous! You'll never see paying customers coming in fast enough to cover the costs.
Actually, I'm on both sides of the hosting: the reseller (wich I use for my hosting) and the dedicated server itself (as a partner in web-viper.com). I think it's logical newbies/n00bs go with the unlimited or unmetered resellers, the thing I can't understand is hosts providing those services. You can't make up for it! I've seen hosts with those plans going down because someone thought he could create a mirror for filefront on that server :shame:

I say we should ban ridiculous offers from sites like these because there is no such thing as unlimited or unmetered

Hosts do not provide resellers with unlimited/unmeterd bandwidth. The kids just make that up, ignorantly thinking "Oh, I've got another 15GB left, I'll be fine". That runs out in a week.

Actually we don't set any limits for our resellers with regard to how many hosting accounts
they can create or how much space or bandwidth those accounts use. Plus, we have
the capability to span reseller accounts across multiple servers so our reseller accounts
are technically infinitely expandable!

HOWEVER ...

WE DO BILL THE RESELLER FOR EVERY HOSTING ACCOUNT THEY
CREATE BASED ON THE SIZE OF THE ACCOUNT CREATED!

And that also goes for our FREE Reseller program as well which provides the
reseller's own web site and DNS servers free of charge but charges the reseller
for any resold accounts that are created with their reseller control panel.

damn.. this thread is getting bigger and bigger..

as some one already have mentioned.. its better to start small than increase depending on the demand.. i think for the new host it will be foolish to get a server to provide hosting rather than reseller account (unless u know what you are doing and you have a ready made client list in hand).. otherwise getting clients takes time and i dont think its wise to spend that much money on something which hasnt shown good return.. just yet.. :classic2:

search ebay and you'll find enough advertising with it

Well, if somebody was brand new and didn't know any different, which would they choose? An account that provides them with 100MB or an account that "supposedly" gives them unlimited space?

This is exactly why every hosting offer with "unlimited" or "unmetered" should just be deleted, along with those who ask for it. It does not exist and it becomes very tedious to see it posted all the time.

Either the people need to be educated on what they really need, or they need to ask for help. They also need to learn to read. Hopefully we get some sense into the heads of these morons.

This brings a related topic to mind .... OVERSELLING.

Overselling is a hosting provider term which refers to allocating more
resources than actually physically exist based on the assumption that
many of your customers won't use the full web space allocated.

Say for example that you have a 1000 MB drive (just to keep it simple) and
you offer your customers 100 MB accounts.

How many of those accounts can you create?

The normal person and honest host would say "10 maximum".

Oversold hosts may create as many as 200 accounts in that space. The
idea being that each customer uses an average of 20 MB so the 80 MB
that is not used on each account could be used to create more accounts.

Some overselling is routine normal business practice in the hosting world but
you really need to watch out for hosts that make a very heavy practice of it.

Anyone who says they have "Unlimited" web space are by the very definition
of the word overselling to the extreme since there is no such thing as
unlimited hard drives.

Many of the hosts out there who say that you have 500, 1000, 2000, or
even more megabytes of web space might in reality only be allocating
you 20, 30, or 40 megabytes of web space because the rest of your
web space might be simultaneously allocated to 30 other hosting
accounts and it is a "he who uses it first" type of deal.

Overselling of course means that the server has more accounts than
it is capable of handling which means drastically reduced performance
and is most commonly seen as a standard practice with hosting resellers
who do not have the physical space to support the number of hosting
accounts they have so this is a way of "stretching" resources so to speak.

When looking for a host, it's often good to ask

"How many accounts per server?"
and "Do you oversell your accounts?"

Just know that all hosts are not created equal and one account from
one host with identical specifications of another account at a different
host may not be so identical after all.

true, but overselling is what makes hosting cheaper!
if a host can store 10 100MB accounts on that dedicated server, and say the cost per month for that server would be 100$ (kinda realistic I think..) each account would cost 10$ each month, without the host making any profits at all.

A host that is overselling not too much, so the server stays reliable & fast, can host up to 50 accounts on that same server, wich makes the money. 50*5 (even cheaper for the clients!) makes 250, so both sides are happy.

I agree though that some companies take overselling too far.

so far that they claim its unlimited

IMHO, Reseller overselling is basically when a host allows a reseller to sell more than the available resources. If you do it carefully, wisely and within limitations according to your experience, make it more meaningful with some statistical data then it can be done. However, I still think that overselling is typically a bad thing. :knockedou

Yes, and to prove that look over the free web space forum once in a while and see how many threads look similar to:

"What happened to Acmehost?"
or
"Acmehost down for the last 3 days?"
or
"No sign of Acmehost"

There is no problem with slightly overlapping a few accounts but hosts here are using as much as 10 times the reseller's/server's allotted amount. Imagine if all the resellers on this forum had restrictions that wouldn't allow them to oversell. Of course, how can't you oversell when you offer 1 GB bandwidth to anyone that can post on a forum?

Uhm ... why does it seem like everyone totally missed the above paragraph
in my earlier post talking about overselling?

To a certain degree, every host oversells accounts otherwise there would be a
massive amount of empty hard drive space going to waste all the time.

There is a big difference between that and these "wannabe" resellers out there
who over allocate 10, 20, 50, and even 100 times their actual physical resources!

These hosts that massively oversell their space often find they are completely
screwed when they get just a few accounts who actually do use the web space
that has been advertised .... OOPS!

Yep, that's where they get stuck. I try to not oversell at all. If I do, it is usually no more than 50MB. My first hosting attempt got stuck in the same problem that you have described. I offered unlimited everything, but someone decided to stick a HUGE file on his space. It was downloaded over 300 times in a month. Bandwidth, gone. Space, nearly gone.

check out the reviews of ebay hosts.. see how bad they are.. people should do research first before they signup for anything from ebay. although they sound pretty tempting..
