Free hosting for a WordPress blog request

Hello,

Note: I am using free hosts to test their hosting facilities, support quality and write a review afterwards. If you aren't OK with this approach (review may be negative, depending on my experience, but always facts-supported), please do not respond.

I need a free hosting without ads (post to host is OK) for a WordPress-powered blog with the following requirements:

- Disk quota: 500Mb or more
- Traffic: 10Gb or more
- Email sending via SMTP (authenticated) allowed (a sending limit of approx. 25-50 daily is OK, I will mostly read mail, not send it)
- PHP 5.2.*+ (5.3.* optimal), with memory limit of 64Mb or higher (or ability to raise it from .htaccess/php.ini in user's Web root)
- Sites in non-English languages allowed
- Registrations from Russian Federation allowed.
- DNS for the domain will be set after hosting plan is activated.
- Activation time below 24 hours.

Note that I will host real-life blog with real-life activity, for several weeks at least, before moving to another free host.

Example: the following hosts have been excluded:
0 0 0 webhost.com: 24 hours passed, still waiting for activation/verification.
byethost.com: requires DNS be set prior to adding domain (impossible in most cases)

Please do post your offers only, I will gladly read your suggestions/comments on the requirements in proper forum section.

Thanks.

So, you're just host hopping and you already plan in advance to bounce around every few weeks? Is that correct? I'm just trying to fully understand what you're trying to do.

I don't think you will be able to find any free hosting that allow you to change the PHP memory limit with .htaccess/php.ini.
If any host allow you to do this, it will eventually kill their own server by abusers.

FYI: I allow this and have suffered no ill effects.

No, I'm not 'hopping'. I am testing free hosters' services.
The results will be my pieces of advice posted to suggest people wishing to get a free hosting (knowing all its drawbacks) whose services should be used.

Myself, I have enough hosting services of my own to host whatever I wish.

I agree. I have tripped over a memory limit in a free hoster's account yesterday. I suggested him raising the limit and explained the reason for that. The limits have been raised.

And what is your website where these "reviews" will be posted?

Reviews, not "reviews". Feel the difference.
The results will be posted in several places, mostly on the 'Infoteque' blog of mine (boyandin.info, it's in Russian) and in related resources such as mailing lists.

What are your criteria for these reviews? How will you be judging the hosts? Relatively or against a set measurement system? What will this system compose of? Without planning these criterion out properly, you become the one thing worse than a bad host, a vocal supporter of bad hosts. You cannot possibly determine whether a host is good or not in a few weeks. The best host reviewer, TaoPhoenix has been running a study on here for years, and it took that long to determine which were the great hosts.

So think this out or quit host hopping.

Have you read the previous thread? If yes, I suggest looking for better word than 'hopping'.

Yes, there are criteria. Yes, hosts may be removed from the list at once for several simple reasons (do not accept orders from a given country; do not provide configuration nevessary to run specific scripts/software).

If the hoster does meet all the basic criteria, long-term analysis begins, it includes the availability of resources, tech.support quality. No one says this can be evaluated in a couple of days.

Also, please take into account that I am doing the reviewing for specific type of users and I take into account their needs, level of knowledge and so on.

You might be misled by my word "moving". In this current context it means that after several weeks pass (it is usually enough to settle every technical issue with a given host) I set up another site at another hoster. All the sites created at other hosters so far remain and live there for as long as possible.

I hope I explained whatever remained unclear.

I am fascinated to see who you get. It will be an interesting tradeoff between my barebones longevity approach and your more technical start-up. But why wouldn't you post a copy of the results here? If a FWS host decides to try your review, we'd want to know the results too!

Surely. I see no reason to make the results private.
I do not expect hordes of hosters will rush to offer something in this thread - I am and will looking for them myself, but at times it does help to ask.

Hello, masterbo,

Hostalope can help you with your request. We would be able to provide the following:

500 mb disk space, 10gb bandwidth
Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP 5.2
FFmpeg, Image Magick, phpMyAdmin, webmail, customizable spam protection.
Unlimited domains/subdomains.
Up to 20 e-mail accounts and 10 databases.
Mailing lists available.

You can have your pick between cPanel and DirectAdmin. We set PHP mem limits to 32mb by default, but we wouldn't have any problem raising it for you; please be sure to include this requirement with your application. Please let us know if you have any questions; it is quicker to reach us via e-mail: http://hostalope.com/contact.html

EDIT: Nevermind, you may consider us unacceptable. We do have a 48 hour activation maximum. This is a maximum tho, most requests are processed much quicker.

Thank you very much, I will request (order) a hosting at your facility in the nearest future.
When I am offered a gift, I won't be too quick to judge, np.

Hello, masterbo,

Hostalope can help you with your request. We would be able to provide the following: ...

I tried to use my usual contact email, webmaster@ in a .name TLD, but I was told email is invalid.
Before I retry with another email, is that an expected signup form behaviour?

Thanks.

Well, my quick guess is that they simply don't have a link to "webmaster@hostalope". Try support@hostalope.com instead. The answer may come back from "root@hostalope" which didn't seem to work either, so you would just redo the Send-To address as support@hostalope.com each time until they put some redirect links in.

That's terrible. However, it won't discourage me from continuing my quest.

Possibly, but there are a lot of companies out there that will no longer deal with Russia, due to the all the abuse that has come from there. Personally, I have yet to actually have a legitimate Russian hosting site. All have started out legit, and had all sorts of backdoor stuff dealing with Phishing and porn, and what not. Unfortunately, other folks have given your country an extremely bad reputation in the hosting world, and there are a lot of hosts out there who won't touch you guys with a 10 foot pole. Same goes for China, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.

Hello, masterbo,

We do allow .ru e-mail addresses. You are speaking of the signup form, correct? May I know what your e-mail is? If you don't wish to say it here, please e-mail it to support@hostalope.com. As Tao, has informed you, you may get a reply from root@hostalope.com which you cannot respond. If this happens, I apologize, it means our staff forgot to login as the correct user before sending out the e-mail.

(I just did a test signup with runn@dex.ru that went through successfully. Once we know your e-mail address we will be able to get the problem narrowed down.)

Thanks for responding. I get problems using email in TLD .NAME, namely webmaster at boyandin dot name (I use it to sign up for hosting accounts).

I leave the translation box untouched (since I can use English), input the rest of data, click on the submit button and see:

"Invalid e-mail address! go back".

Just checked once again - the same result.
