alpha.echelon.net.ru is a non-profit public server which provides remotely accessible unix shell accounts.

disk and bandwidth quota is based on 'fair use' policy.

services:
remote terminal access (via ssh)
file transfer (via sftp/scp)
email (username@alpha.echelon.net.ru), pop3 included (not functional)
homepage (http://alpha.echelon.net.ru:8000/~username)
mysql dba
dev. tools (gcc, g++, nasm, perl, php, python)
irc: irssi, epic

note: some services are still in the process of being added.
the server hard drive will be upgraded soon, so make sure you have a backup copy of whatever files you upload for the time being.
also, there may be long periods of down time with our current signal; hopefully we can obtain a dedicated fiber optic line later on.

if you have any comments or suggestions, please post them below.

Optimum Online is going to kick the bejesus out of you when they find out. But Good Luck on your public SSH Thing

darkshadow604,
(for windows users)
for terminal access, you must download putty
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
set the protocol to SSH, for hostname: alpha.echelon.net.ru, port: 22

to transfer files, you must download winscp
http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/download.php
same as above, hostname: alpha.echelon.net.ru, port: 22
the 'private key file' field is not necessary.

hottweelz,
thank you. i have contacted optimum online.
i was filing for 501(c)7, but it doesn't seem likely since there's a bit of work and money involved.
at the moment, we're planning on getting a dedicated fiber optic line, as i mentioned above.

Are you out on the island? Fiber is BIG $$$ .... Lightpath should be able to take care of you for less $$ (Assuming you're on the Island) I may know someone who can help with the Non-Profit Org deal at a mininum. I'm doing that with my Luxury Car Club.

yes, i'm on the island... i was thinking of looking into verizon fios (15mbps dl/5mbps ul), since it's not in the area yet, i shall consider lightpath as well. thanks :)

I commend your effort, I think this is a good thing to do. Gives ppl an opprtunity to learn linux, provided they understand the likely uptime, security and data integrity issues.

Might be worth lashing up a simple forum on your website too and adding adsense, etc. Btw nice website

well it looks like fake as there is no login link at all no ip to login to using shell .So i guess might be just another spam.

Question about irc (?) services which are included

echelon,
you posted that your shell includes - irc: irssi, epic.
I'm unsure of what you mean by this (I don't know a lot about shell services). Can you (or someone else) explain to me what those services are, and how to use them?

Thanks,
techtvfan

*edit* This doesn't have anything to do with my previous question, but I assume that any file storage other than for a website is prohibited? I'm asking because I don't see that stated anywhere on the site....

One last thing, how do I login to the actual site (not for access, but to change my password if I need to) ? I'm almost sure I saw a login link yesterday *edit*

I have to say I was sceptical at first. But I signed up, and everything works fine (albeit I cant seem to create mysql databases with mysql from the command line?).

As described on their website, you can log in for example from the command line with:

ssh username@alpha.echelon.net.ru

hi becca,
i apologize for the sudden change, recently Optimum Online decided to block all incoming/outgoing traffic on port 25, so there will be no mail server until i find a work-around. if not, this will have to be another issue which will be resolved once the isp is changed. so for now, you will only be able to send/recieve mail internally with other members (by using either 'mutt' or 'mail').

link107,
if you're on linux, just run 'ssh alpha.echelon.net.ru -l username'

techtvfan,
please refer to my previous post
in order to manage your account you must enter the server through ssh.
once you login, you can change your account password by running 'passwd'.
and yes, you can use your shell account to store files privately by simply not placing them in the 'public_html' folder within your home directory.
as for irc, you can access irc servers through the terminal by running either 'epic', or 'irssi' at the prompt.

elysianhosting,
thank you for your comments. and yes, i am aware of the risks involved. :)
and the reason i decided to use a p1 @ 152mhz is because it's less likely that it would cause any damage if anyone was to use any flooding methods to attack a remote server. i'm planning on upgrading the hard drive to 200gb within this month.
also, i will be getting an additional server online shortly (not a p1 :)).
and i'm working on getting up your mysql accounts right now. the databases will be created automatically for newer users once i update the registration script.

i will look into the mail server matter when i get a chance.

for those of you who are trying to access your database, you must first run mysql from the shell.
then, enter: create database your_username;
(your db name is the same as your user name)

next, set a password on your mysql account, run this query:
set password for 'your_username'@'localhost' = password('new_password');

from then on, you will be required to enter mysql your_username -p to access your database from the shell.

for those of you who register after this post has been made, your password will be the same as the one you sign up with. you will only be required to create your database manually.

i will be compiling a faq with all this information, and more.
