Free webhost supporting vB needed

Typhlosion

New Member
I'm searching for a host that can take 5 GB/month bandwidth or more.. supposedly no more than 100 MB storage.
I already have a database server, so no need for that..

All I need is a server that can host a possible higly trafficed vBulletin 2.2.6, and supports the php needed for it.
And I try to get a free one first, I cannot have two paid webhosts..

Well, it seems more than a little odd that someone would spend $160 on a license for vBulletin, and then try to find free hosting for it.

As the license is for a particular domain, it's doubly odd that the original poster didn't mention that he/she needed domain support.

You know what they say when one assume

hmph

LOL

vBulletin is as low as $85

plus, just because you BUY a license don't mean you have to BUY hosting

if vB was FREE, most would WANT it, just like theres FREE HOSTING , unfortunately vB does not OFFER FREE script.

I read in one forum on vBulletin.com that licensing didnt even start til version 2.2.8 anyhow , so he/she may be safe anyways, DONT ASSUME, I dont have the time to go back to vbulletin.com to find that post right now

pcpowerplay: Yes, it's possible that this is all legit, it just seems strange that someone would use a commercial forum on a free host rather than a free forum on a paid host.

The latter would result in a more reliable site - particularly if it becomes popular.

ibfw: The full version of vBulletin has been a commercial product for at least 3 years.

The Lite version (which hasn't been available for almost a year) was severely cut down, and most recent freeware/open source programs offer many more features.

Yes, a leased license can be obtained for as little as $85, but as that only lasts a year, an "owned" license (which doesn't expire) makes more sense financially.

I wasn't suggesting that buying a license meant that you must also buy hosting. What I actually meant was the money would be better spent on the hosting if only one thing was to be paid for.

A site is only as reliable as the host server, after all.

My point about the domain also remains.

That's an assumption on your part. :p

In my experience, many people pirate/crack commercial programs just because they are commercial - even if there are legitimately free equivalents available elsewhere.

Whether that's because they think commercial programs are inherently better, or if it's a "status" thing, I couldn't say.

Most people pirate/crack commercial programs because that is what the mainstream uses and they dont want to be using something other than that what the mainsteam uses.

Well, after you said it was pirated he/she never posted again....

Either the person thought hostultra or distanthost was good enough and just never bothered to post again or you spooked them.

THATS an assumption on YOUR part

answer this, WHY would YOU PAY for the SAME service or item if you can get that SAME item for free ?

remember YOU assumed he had a pirated copy because he choose to put a pricy item on a free item (?)

scroll back up and read

:topic:

You can settle your argument in pms.

I doubt the thread starter is going to come back so there is no point in keeping this thread going unless you have some suggestions for a host that meets his requirements.

IBFW, there's no need for any aggression now. You must be a conservative, LOL. :p

I personally know someone who can afford to buy a vB (or $160) but nothing else. She already has a paid host for the rest of her site. Although there are very few people in her position, I think Typhlosion could be honest. Most free hosts would find a vB suspicious, however, so I would recommend going paid all the way. :)

Ha, I'm not "aggressive"

ha

I'm just stating one shouldn't assume ( as he/she did )

I have 2 PAID VBULLETIN licenses, but I get FREE 500 Megs of hosting with Php and MySQL with unmetered bandwith from one server ( ADULT SITE ). so why should I ( or anyone else ) that can get that much FREE MB, and options for FREE go and "PAY" for it ?

I'm already PAYING $15 a month for one site that doesn't even give me as much space as the FREE host.. only good thing I have on my PAID service is the Control Panel

I kinda forgot to check the forum..

As a matter of fact, my plans are to purchase a legal vB, 3.0.0, but hosting, as montly payment, is something I do not want to purchase. I have a great payment webhost at 5 gigs a month for about 5$ a month, but the forum would exeed the limit.

I buy the vB for 160$ as a one-time payment, but I don't wanna have several period payment webhosts.

hostultra.com looks great.. but there has to be a catch? slow speed?
And besides..
Host Ultra is only accepting signups from the following countries:
Antigua and Barbuda / Australia / Bahamas / Barbados / Belize / Bermuda / Canada / Dominica / Grenada / Guyana / Ireland / Jamaica / New Zealand / Saint Lucia / Saint Vincent and the Grenadines / South Africa / Trinidad and Tobago / United Kingdom / United States

I live in Norway.. not being on that list.

As for distanthost..
"Applications for new accounts are only accepted on Mondays and Thursdays, the times for signup on these days are at around Noon until 22:00 Alaskan time.. If you have accessed this page on a day besides these two, please come back on the next sign-up day. On this page, you will find a clock, we utilize this clock for the next day of signups"
Sounds wierd to me..

I personally think that the people fighting over the VB issue should take it on some place else, this really isnt the place.

If he asks to hosts a VB i think its his right, if the hosts gets suspicious they can always contact vBulletin and figure it out with them, and the owner.

Typhlosion: Have you considered using a remotely hosted forum service? They tend to be more reliable than using free hosting, as the servers are usually configured specifically for use with a particular forum and mailing facilities are usually enabled as they can only be used for forum related purposes (most free hosts disable email due to spamming abuse).

There are quite a few listed in this section of HotScripts, both paid and free.

I still think using a free forum script such as InvisionBoard or phpBB in conjuction with paid hosting would give a more reliable result though. You could also choose the advertisements yourself that way.

A remotely hosted service might be a good compromise between the two extremes.

I've been through proboard, YaBB and phpBB the last years, not being pleased with the results of any of them.
This is my current phpBB;
http://typhlo.net/forum/
The traffic is almost exeeding the limit already, still in my opinion the forum standard is way too low, the thing is full of errors and stuff, and changing the templates are hard, I find it easier altering vB.

Even if I chose another board than vB, I would still need a php/mysql webhost, or alternatively shut down the board every month when it's almost exeeding the limit.

Well, if I were choosing a free forum, I'd probably go for IkonBoard (Perl) or InvisionBoard (PHP) rather than the others you've mentioned.

You could then use the $160 you were going to spend on vBulletin to purchase two years (or so) of hosting, or upgrade your existing package to get extra transfer.

vBulletin is a nice piece of software, but it will still run less reliably on a free host. Also, in my experience, free hosts tend not to have mailing facilities enabled for very long before they're forced to disable it due to other (ab)users using it to send spam.

Not requiring users to register would open you up to all kinds of abuse, and manually checking email addresses and sending out passwords is very time consuming (been there, done that).

Maybe you'll get lucky, but chances are you'd be back here before long looking for another free host with mail options enabled. If you don't have another domain name to use with the forum, that would mean changing your URL again too.

If you're really determined to use vBulletin despite all this, I'd suggest that you keep an eye on the "Free hosting offers" category, and/or the WebHostingTalk forums for a paid host offering a limited number of free accounts. They usually get snapped up pretty quickly though.

I have about all I need at the other server... unlimited mail-accounts... could I not use this from another server than the one the forum resides on?

I've signed up at both "coolfreepages.com" and distanthost.com, not recieving any respond from any.

As for the host I am using, doubling the bandwidth will increase my monthly payment by about 3 times.
