When considering hosting from home, you need to consider the upstream speed of your connection and whether in fact your ISP will allow you to run a server on your home connection.

Than you would need to decide if you will be a windows or linux host. You would need to install security for your server and only open needed ports. There are many softwares out there for windows that would get you up with basic features such as php, mysql, perl and etc. IIS would be best for windows and Apache is good for linux. You would also need to get an FTP server.

Take a look here for the windows server guide: http://www.auphanonline.com/articles/view.php?article_id=1387

Here is for linux: http://www.harrysufehmi.com/phpwiki/index.php/SettingUpLinuxServer

Also, some mail servers will reject email from known residential IP's, so you'll still need a mail relay on a commercial provider's network.

As I said...

Some mail servers will detect that your SMTP server is on a residential service and not allow you to send mail (AOL is an example) to them.
