Hard drive makes loud buzzing noise on start-up?

Yesterday when I turned my computer on, instead of the hard drive quietly speeding up, it made a buzzing noise for about 2 or 3 seconds. Afterwards I checked it's properties, I now have another 500MB of free space after doing nothing different. Did it just shared off a part of my hard drive...? Come to think of it, it has almost reached the end of it's 5 year lifespan...

main suspects are the hard drive or the PSU (specifically the PSU fan).

Test the hard drive with drive maker's diagnostic software which loads from a bootable CD (you cannot test the Windows system drive with Windows-based software). The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

The download is usually an 'ISO' file from which you can create a CD using IMGBurn from here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Boot your PC from that CD to test the drive.

In the case of the PSU, it can't be tested. Just replace it if it's suspect. Take the opportunity to fit one with a higher wattage rating (output), especially if the existing one is the original factory-fitted unit.

Never heard about hard drives making a buzzing sound. If that is for real then the disc platter may have been disturbed inside and you need to take a backup of all your data immediately, because you can get get a hard drive failure at any time. Please make sure to get it verified by a local engineer.

You could check your hard drive by using some free tools, search for "Hirens Boot CD".
Hirens Boot CD is a boot disk utility which comes with a lot of software for diverse needs and does not require installation.
